Samantalang ang UST end of 3rd 3 fouls lang. Kalokohan!

I had this feeling na nirereserba lang ni Sumang ang mga tira nya para sa 4th. Nagpipigil sya nung 1st 3 quarters.

And what can I say more about Sumang! Saving UE once again! Epic!

Troubling loss to NU, Romeo's struggles reveal cracks in FEU Tams' armor

WHAT a difference two weeks make.

Just last month, Far Eastern University's Tamaraws were the toast of the UAAP after a sweep of their seven games in the first round while top star Terrence Romeo was its poster boy, hailed as a great individual talent who has finally figured out how it is to play within the team concept.

One loss at the resumption of hostilities following a self-imposed league break to give way to the hosting of the Fiba-Asia championships not only quashed FEU's chance of a two-round sweep of the eliminations but also revealed cracks in the Tamaraws' armor.

It was not so much the defeat but the way the Tamaraws lost the game that has riled FEU coach Nash Racela, who initially tried to take the flak for the defeat until he could no longer suppress the rage inside him.

“I would say that it was my fault because of my commitment with Gilas. So probably, I was sending a wrong message (to the players) by not being there,” said Racela, who was forced to miss some FEU practices owing to his role as an assistant coach at Gilas.

But when asked what he told his boys inside the dugout, Racela admitted, “Iba doon sa pinag-usapan natin.”

Pressed on what led to the 58-59 loss to National University, Racela said: “Siguro part of the culture change, more off the court,” without elaborating.

It was no surprise that Romeo took the heat from fans after the defeat where he finished with only eight points on 3-of-16 shooting and tried to go on his own in a late offensive play and ended up turning the ball over, setting the stage for Bobby Parks' game-winning free throws.

Worse, his relationship with fellow star RR Garcia once again showed cracks when he tried to waive off his backcourt partner, who until then had carried the fight for the Tamaraws, not just once during that fateful final play.

Romeo ended up losing the ball on a crossover, fanning accusations that he had gone back to his old ways.

One of those who noticed and was bold enough to air his thoughts, former Ateneo star Nico Salva, said via Twitter, "Romeo is back to his old self. Why dont u just give the ball to RR?"

He ended up in an online spat with Romeo who obviously didn't appreciate the dig. (For full story, see Nico Salva's dig at 'ball hog' Terrence Romeo triggers war of words on Twitter)

Sought for comment later, Romeo admitted that he was "out of shape" because he "relaxed" during the Fiba-Asia break, bolstering rumors that Racela blew his top after learning that his players had "one too many night outs" during the lull while their coach was away on Gilas duty.

Romeo, at least, was man enough to admit that he underperformed.

“Disiplina namin, hindi ko nadala sa sarili ko. Medyo napabayaan ko ‘yung kundisyon ko,” the league's leading MVP contender acknowledged. “Medyo nakaapekto, hindi namin nagamit ‘yung long break na makapag-pahinga. Medyo nag-relax kami.”

Asked about Romeo’s struggles, Racela pointed to his Gilas commitment and said: “It’s all connected.”

All that showed was that the Tamaraws, for all their inspired play in the first round, remain a work in progress as they look to end years of frustration since winning the school's last championship in 2005 with a team bannered by Arwind Santos, Jeff Chan, and Dennis Miranda.

Racela, however, has embraced the challenge.

“Good thing despite us struggling the whole game, we could have won the game. We gave up a few free throws in the end,” said Racela.

“But it will depend on how quick we adjust and change. ‘Yun ang importante after this loss. It’s welcome for me. I welcome this (challenge) with open arms.”

“These boys aren’t car parts that you can just change instantly, it’s all about patience. It’s a lot like farming, you plant the seeds and you wait for them to grow,”

Sumang dazzles as UE edges UST

MANILA, Philippines -- With the game down the line, University of the East went to its smallest man with the biggest heart in Roi Sumang for their final play – and it paid off.

Down by 11 at the start of the final quarter, Sumang almost single-handedly lifted the Red Warriors to a 68-67 victory over University of Santo Tomas in the 76th UAAP men’s basketball tournament Thursday night, August 15 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The cat-quick guard poured in 12 of his 20 points in the 4th quarter, including the game-winner he made over Karim Abdul that lifted UE to its 4th straight victory.

“Sa first half nag-adjust ako kasi gusto ko mga teammates ko muna iiscore nung second half parang di na nag-click yung ginagawa ko, so ako na ang gumawa para sa mga teammates ko,” Sumang, who added 10 assists and four rebounds, said. “Sabi ni coach kung sino daw ang pinakamalaking puso, so ako nanaman, kinuha ko nanaman.”

The Growling Tigers looked perched to take the win early as they led the Red Warriors 58-47 after the 3rd but Sumang starred in a 12-0 run to start the final frame that put them to shared second in the standings with National University at 5-3.

Coming off a two-week lay-off due to the Philippines hosting the FIBA Asia Championship, both teams started the game on equal footing but UST took off in the second half, outscoring the Red Warriors 20-10 behind the combined 14 3rd quarter-points from Abdul and Kevin Ferrer.

UST, however, tried to fight back in the last 5 minutes as Ferrer sank a triple to gain a 4-point advantage but Lord Casejeros and Sumang combined to retake the lead and ultimately the win.

Charles Mammie put up another double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds while Ralf Oliveros scored 15 markers all in the first half.

Both teams were evidently still rusty from the long break as they committed 16 turnovers each but UE made a living from UST’s errors, scoring 16 turnover points to the Growling Tigers' 8.

Abdul finished the game with 23 points on top of 20 boards while Clark Bautista, Ferrer and Ed Daquioag added 13, 12, and 12 to lead UST’s losing cause. - Rappler.com

congrats UE!! sana this 2nd round galingan nyo pa!!!!!!!!!!! beat UP then FEU. alam ko kaya ng UE makipag sabayan sa lahat ng team at manalo sa end game kung dikit ang score. wag lang papalamang at alam naman natin na ang lasalle at ateneo mahirap habulin pag cla na ang nalamang. sa feu naman kung nalamangan nga natin cla ng madami during the first half ng 1st round of elimination kaya din natin cla matalo. just play with consistency. adamson hmmmm kayang kaya yan this second round naunahan at natambakan lang talaga ang ue.ayun. pero I know na kaya nila adamson. hope to have 5-2 win loss mark for the 2nd round. much better if we have 7-0. hehe Im just hoping.

I believe this year will be the best chance(pero mas malakas tayo next year) to win it all!

Bakit?Nasa atin pa si Coach Boyzie. The team has already surpassed their achievement last year by leaps and bounds under the tutelage of Coach Boyzie.

We may be stronger next year due to the entry of Arafat and Renz Palma, and a bigger role of Jumao-as(and with the exodus of Noble, Sumido and Flores lols), we may not have the wisdom of Coach Boyzie come next season with the offing of his coaching stint with Cebuana and Ginebra.

Let us hope and pray that Coach Boyzie will choose to stay with UE.

If not, let us all thank him for the great things he has done for the team and bid him luck for his future endeavors.

Posible.
