It's otherwise bro.

Hat's off to Noble for stepping-up.

Olayon's quite noticing. He has the handles and the moves.

Tsk. Lagi na lang.

Mahihirapan tayo sa DLSU panigurado yan with twin towers Van Opstal and Torres.

Kung nahirapan tayo sa DLSU nung 1st Round with Mammie on the floor ngayon panigurado hirap na hirap.

UE coach not giving up despite Warriors' slide
By Camille B. Naredo, ABS-CBNnews.com
Posted at 09/01/2013 11:25 AM | Updated as of 09/01/2013 11:25 AM

MANILA, Philippines – University of the East (UE) head coach Boycie Zamar is not giving up on the Red Warriors’ season despite a two-game losing streak that dealt a blow to their chances of making it to the Final Four.

The Red Warriors lost in double-overtime to the Far Eastern University Tamaraws last week, and then dropped another game to the National University Bulldogs on Saturday.

They were playing without big man Charles Mammie, who is serving the first game of a two-game suspension, as well as guard Lord Casajeros.

But Zamar said he appreciated the efforts of his players as they were able to keep the game close for the first three quarters until NU finally pulled away in the payoff period.

“Nakita naman natin, lumaban kami,” he said. “Kita mo naman, depleted ‘yung line-up, eh 'yan ang reality. Ang importante doon ay yung fighting heart nila.”

“Dumikit kami, kaso lang, 'yung mga small things – turnovers, rebounds, free throws. Hindi na-convert,” he added.

The loss dropped the Red Warriors to 5-5 this season, tied for a share of fifth place along with the University of Sto. Tomas Growling Tigers.

Zamar is not losing hope, however, and he insisted that their season is far from over.

“Four games pa ‘yan,” he said. “As long as nandoon lang kami sa top four. ‘Yun lang ang katukin namin ng katukin. Hindi pa bumubukas eh. Hinahanap ko pa ‘yung susi, hindi ko pa alam kung nasaan. Mahahanap din namin ‘yan, and hopefully, we’ll find a way.”

The Red Warriors will face De La Salle University on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.

“Magpapahinga lang kami sandali, and then we’ll be ready (for La Salle),” said Zamar. “Four games to go, but we need to focus first on La Salle.”

FEU had their chances to win the game vs UST.

Solo 2nd sila.

At tayo labas na sa top four.

The DLSU is a must-win game!

Wala tayong boses. Sunod lang tayo sa decision ng Board.

Loyzaga won't sanction Perasol for spat with fan
By Reuben Terrado

UAAP commissioner Chito Loyzaga is leaving it up to Ateneo officials on whether Blue Eagles coach Bo Perasol will be sanctioned for confronting a De La Salle fan at the end of the tightly-fought contest between the two rival schools on Sunday.

Loyzaga stressed he will not wade into the issue involving Perasol and a supporter of the Green Archers who heckled him on his way to the dugout, triggering the spat that saw the Ateneo coach attempt to charge at the fan in the stands.

“Post-game incident of coach Bo is an issue I will not get involved in. It had nothing to do with the game,” said Loyzaga. “I believe it is the responsibility of the UAAP member school to discipline their teams.”

According to officials, the league board will only take up the matter if someone files a formal complaint, although the league has a history of slapping penalties on misbehaving fans as was the case with the father of former Ateneo stalwart Nico Salva and the mother of ex-UST back-up Carmelo Afuang.
The commissioner, however, is expected to act on the actions of Perasol when he was called for a technical foul with a minute left in the tightly-fought contest for crossing the court and complaining to the referees.

Perasol said the fan - later identified by news portal Rappler as JJ Atayde - crossed the line when he lashed out at him and the Ateneo team while they were exiting the Smart-Araneta Coliseum playing court on their way to the dugout.

The Ateneo coach was about to charge the La Salle supporter as he tried to cross the barrier at the baseline when venue security and his coaching staff pacified him.

Atayde, a cousin of De La Salle representative to the UAAP board Henry Atayde, already expressed his intentions to apologize to Perasol in the same interview with Rappler.

Atayde admitted having told the Ateneo coach, “Perasol, salamat sa pagpapanalo mo sa amin,” apparently referring to the technical foul on Perasol that led to two late free throws by La Salle star Almond Vosotros.

But Atayde insisted that what he said was nothing personal and was just “fun kantyawan.”

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I tried to be objective as much as I could to read, understand and really think about all the points of our dear commissioner, but this explanation from the commissioner is just bull. WTF.

If that is his logic, then dapat walang call dun sa POST GAME Casajeros-Cabrera incident in the ADU-UE game. That altercation was already AFTER the game. Where is the common grounds there?? And what about the flopping? Damn the slow-mos already reveal, garapalan ang flop, walang contact pero may call?! And a lot of NON CALLS. Haay grabe tlga...

Loyzaga has the floor

IS it true due process was not followed before the suspensions were meted on University of the East cagers Charles Mammie and Lord Casajeros?

If so, then UAAP Commissioner Chito Loyzaga, the “trial judge,” owes it to the public to explain his action.

I have supported Loyzaga’s move suspending Mammie and Casajeros for two games following accusations of “unsportsmanlike conduct” they had committed before and during the FEU-UE game last week.

I did so with the assumption Loyzaga had followed the law on due process, which is, that before a case has to be resolved with finality, all sides of the issue must first be heard.

Most important of all, the accused (Mammie and Casajeros) must be allowed to give their side of the matter before a final decision could be rendered by the hearing officer (Loyzaga).

Even Dear God, so eloquently cited by the late Justice Isagani Cruz, observed due process in the case of the eating of the forbidden apple.

Before tossing primary suspects Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden for disobeying His order not to eat the apple, Dear God wanted first to hear an explanation, asking, “Where art, though, Adam?” That was giving notice, which is a primary component of due process of law.

When Adam appeared in “Court,” Dear God inquired: “Didst thou eat of the forbidden fruit?”

Said Justice Cruz: “That was giving Adam a chance to be heard. Thus, was the groundwork of due process laid down by the Eternal Judge in the Garden of Eden.”

And so again, I ask: Did Loyzaga call Mammie and Casajeros to his office and allow them to present their side on the “unsportsmanlike conduct” case hurled on the two Warriors?

If yes, then Loyzaga observed due process of law and, therefore, was justified in his decision slapping the suspensions. Whether he correctly handed down the right decision or not became immaterial.

If no, then Loyzaga committed a big mistake and could be guilty of grave abuse of authority. Injustice and not justice has been served. Ugly.

For, Daniel Webster defines due process as “the law which hears before it condemns, which proceeds upon inquiry and renders judgment only after trial.”

Said Themistocles to Eurybiades: “Strike! But hear me first!”

Justice Frankfurter, obviously a sports buff, said: “Due process is the embodiment of the sporting idea of fair play,” and which, according to Justice Cruz, “rejects anything that smacks of official arbitrariness.”

With Mammie and Casajeros serving their suspensions on Saturday, National University easily defeated UE, 81-73. Cruel for UE because it pushed the school on the cliff of elimination.

I have spoken.

Now, I yield the floor to Loyzaga.

That is due process all over again.

The UE Alumni Association Official Statement re "Suspension-happy" Loyzaga
To the: Commissioner and the Board of Trustees of the
University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP)

From the: UE Alumni Association Inc. (UEAAI)

Cc: Board of Trustees of the University of the East (UE)

Date: September 3, 2013

Subject: A CALL FOR JUSTICE, FAIRNESS AND DUE PROCESS
IN THE UAAP 76 MEN’S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
_____________________________________________________________

We in the University of the East Alumni Association Inc. (UEAAI) have put much thought into airing this statement and we now feel that it is high time to make ourselves heard.

We rarely intervene in matters that the Management of the University of the East, our Alma Mater, can ably address. Yet this time we, UE alumni of various generations and fields of endeavor, might be able to contribute humbly yet positively to the collective efforts at bolstering the spirit of sportsmanship and fairness in the country’ premier collegiate sports league.

With all due respect to the gentleman UAAP 76 Commissioner and the ladies and gentlemen who comprise the UAAP Board of Trustees, we wish to draw attention to what appears to be instances of unfair treatment towards the members of the UE Red Warriors-Men’s Basketball Team across the ongoing UAAP 76 men’s basketball tournament.

There are several such instances in UAAP 76 of inequitable treatment of particular members of the UE men’s basketball team, such that essaying them all can easily lengthen this document. In the interest of brevity, we shall focus on two of the most recent suspensions of as many UE Red Warriors, which have made a major impact not just on UE’s men’s basketball standings in UAAP 76 but more so in the overall conduct and observations of the tournament.

The first involves UE’s lone playing import this season, Charles Mammie, who has been unceremoniously “slapped” with a two-game suspension. This following a supposed offense during the team’s game versus the FEU Tamaraws on August 25, 2013.

Even though the alleged offense was never called by any of the game’s referees—one of whom was even at the very scene of the supposed infraction—the UAAP Commissioner, reportedly after reviewing the game on video, deemed it as deserving of a penalty. And just like that, without giving the parties involved the benefit of due process and, apparently, without consulting the UAAP Board’s own Technical Committee either, the Commissioner went ahead and meted a two-game suspension upon Mr. Mammie.

The second involves another one of UE’s key players, Ralf Olivares. While Mr. Olivares’ technical fouls and unsportsmanlike behavior in the team’s August 31, 2013, were actually called during the game and that his actions are not inarguable, we respectfully deem it unjust that the young man was dealt by the Commissioner with a two-game suspension sans the benefit of due process.

Adding insult to injury is the highly visible fact that such supposed offenses by UE players have likewise been committed by members of a number of other UAAP member-schools’ teams, yet those other schools’ own offenders either have had much lighter penalties or none at all.

What’s more, these and similar instances are in plain view of UAAP men’s basketball’s massive audience within the tournament’s universe, i.e., during the games and afterwards. And such unfortunate decisions continue to be discussed and debated through standard conversation, traditional media and social media, and among UE and even non-UE fans—with a zeal that matches, if not surpasses, the player’s own constant passion at the hard court.

In fact, don’t take our word for it. Within the last 48 hours, two of the country’s respected sports columnists, namely former PBA coach and former PBA deputy commissioner Tommy Manotoc and veteran sports journalist Al Mendoza, have published independent columns in the Philippine Daily Inquirer and Manila Standard Today, respectively. In essence, their latest columns call into question the recent, shall we say, provocative decisions made by the UAAP Commissioner—who, UAAP viewers of all ages know, is himself a former player in the rough-and-tumble league that is the Philippine Basketball Association.

The repercussions of incidents such as these harsh suspensions are far-reaching.

Beyond bare statistics, such weighty decisions impact upon the direct participants of the games, who have worked tirelessly to become the professional athletes that they are today; as well as the countless audiences far and wide, of various ages and backgrounds, who view the games for the basic entertainment and excitement they provide and, subconsciously or not, for the vivid microcosm of life that basketball and sports truly are.

The members of the University of the East community, which includes the Management and Coaching Staff of the UE Red Warriors-Men’s Basketball Team, are ever conscious of espousing and sustaining integrity in all of their work and actions.

UE has been in the service of youth, country and God for over six decades now and will, in fact, be marking its 67th Foundation Anniversary this September, and never has nor will the University and all who work, study in or remain part of it, including us millions of her alumni, be a genuine party to supposed unsportsmanlike behavior that are the alleged root of Mr. Mammie’s and Mr. Olivares’ suspensions.

Everyone in UE is ever conscious and aware of its accomplishments and repute, and never will aim to waste the good name that our founders, predecessors and we ourselves have built together all these years. Nor will our players be completely foolish as to readily squander years and years of time, blood, sweat, tears and sacrifice in traveling the road to the UAAP—thereby making such suspensions a very real source of heartbreak and frustration.

All things considered, while our penalized players may well be deemed victims of decisions that at least deserve discussion, if not debate, there are far more casualties in these scenarios than those in the suspensions’ immediate sphere.

For one thing, the suspensions of Mr. Mammie and Mr. Olivares, hard-hitting and open to question as they are, impacts on the morale of their team. By extension, those suspensions also impact on the athletes’ own fellow UE students and, even further, to UE’s workforce—officialdom, faculty members and other personnel—and, much further, to the University’s numerous alumni.

Even then, the true casualty of unfortunate happenstances such as those suspensions is, in a very real sense, the UAAP men’s basketball tournament itself.

After all, these unheralded decisions of the good Commissioner, which are made in private but have very public consequences, are visible to the naked eye of any ardent UAAP observer or fan. Most of all, they endanger the very ideals that the league espouses. Should this sort of scenario be allowed to prosper, the UAAP, with its rich and colorful 76 years, just might end up becoming a farce to be derided and not the force it has long been reckoned to be.

We remain respectful and admiring of the good Commissioner and the ladies and gentlemen of the UAAP Board of Trustees, who must be commended for their dedication and efforts in the ongoing UAAP Season 76—which, it must be noted, will last up to March next year.

We are ourselves are open to dialogue should the Commissioner and the Board deem it meritorious. We remain supportive of the UAAP and all of its tournaments at inspiring the young and the young at heart to be epitomes of greatness that never ends.

And we remain hopeful that, as sharp as their eyes are, the Commissioner and the Board would be receptive enough and open their ears, minds and hearts as well to our plea for justice, fairness and due process as we continue to appreciate and relish the sights and sounds of the UAAP.

Thank you and more power to the UE

UE alumni group cries foul, hits Loyzaga for 'unfair treatment' of banned duo

By Reuben Terrado
September 03, 2013, 04:47 pm

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

THE University of the East Alumni Association Incorporated (UEAAI) has cried foul over what it believes is the “unfair treatment” the school's players have been getting in the UAAP Season 76 men’s basketball tournament.

In a three-page letter addressed to the UAAP Board of Trustees and commissioner Chito Loyzaga, the UEAAI expressed concern over the successive suspensions slapped on UE players as it called for "justice, fairness, and due process" for the duration of the tournament.

“We wish to draw attention to what appears to be instances of unfair treatment towards the members of the UE Red Warriors men’s basketball team across the ongoing UAAP 76 men’s basketball tournament,” said the UEAAI in the letter.

The UEAAI cited instances of “inequitable treatment” of its players particularly the two-game suspensions slapped by Loyzaga on UE players Charles Mammie and Ralf Olivares.

The alumni association believed Mammie and Olivares were both denied due process when the commissioner handed down the penalties.

Loyzaga slapped Mammie with a two-game suspension for his third unsportsmanlike foul when he entered the landing spot of Far Eastern University’s Terrence Romeo, the decision coming after a video review done by the UAAP Commissioner’s Office.

“And just like that, without giving the parties involved the benefit of due process and, apparently, without consulting the UAAP board’s own technical committee, the commissioner went ahead and meted a two-game suspension upon Mr. Mammie,” said the UEAAI.

Olivares, the UEAAI said, was also denied due process when he was called for unsportsmanlike fouls for stepping on the stomach of National University’s Nico Javelona and elbowing Robin Rono in the face last Saturday.

“While his actions are not inarguable, we respectfully deem it unjust that the young man was dealt by the commissioner with his own two-game suspension sans the benefit of due process,” said the UEAAI.

The UEAAI also believed that other teams had similar offenses but had lighter penalties, and that the penalties on UE players have been a subject of debate by the public.

The UE’s alumni association also believed that the suspensions not only affect the players but also the entire UE community.

“By extension, those suspensions also impact on the athletes’ own fellow UE students and, even further, to UE’s workforce — officialdom, faculty members and other personnel — and, much further, to the university’s numerous alumni,” said the UEAAI.
