Ready for more surprises from UE's Batiller and Derige?

A season ago, two names came from out of nowhere to lead the University of the East into battle.

Assumed to be Paul Varilla’s team, the Red Warriors were instead bannered by breakouts from Bonbon Batiller in the first round and Clark Derige in the second round.

Now a year older and wiser, the second-year players are very much aware that they wouldn’t be catching anyone off-guard anymore. As Batiller put it, “Sinasabi sa akin
palagi nila coach, ‘’Di ka na bago sa UAAP. Na-scout ka na nila kaya kailangan ng extra hardwork.”

That rings even truer now that there’s no veteran leader like Chris Javier to keep them in check. “Alam naman namin na kailangan naming lalo mag-step up kasi kumbaga,
kami na yung liderato ngayon,” the General Santos native expressed.

For his part, Derige he just chooses to not let the pressure get to him. “Yung mindset ko lang naman talaga is gawin yung kung ano yung makakatulong sa amin,” he said.

Heading into Season 79 without any reinforcement from a foreign student-athlete, UE only needs more development and no sophomore slump from their rising stars last year.

And contrary to popular opinion, Derige  is relishing the chance to lead a frontline that would have to contend with the likes of De La Salle University’s Ben Mbala and
Adamson University’s Pape Sarr. “Kakayanin natin talaga yun,” he said.

The recruit out of Quirino  added, “Sabi nga ni coach, mas maganda maglaro ng All-Filipino para maiba naman.”

Of course, he wouldn’t be alone in that tall task as anyone and everyone know very well that the Warriors’ defense begins from the backcourt. “Doble sipag na talaga kami
kasi ginawa naming motivation na walaa kaming import na tatao sa gitna,” Batiller said.

The 'other' RR is a Red Warrior

If you thought RR De Leon was kinda under the radar for the duration of his collegiate career with the UE Red Warriors, never fear because you are not alone.

The sweet-shooting big man himself is one of you.

However, as he takes over the role of UE's stretch 5 for UAAP Season 79, De Leon is out to make sure you remember his name right.

"This year, on everything," De Leon said when asked what he hopes to improve for the Red Warriors in the new season.

"Kasi nung previous season ko, wala eh. Kumbaga di ko na-feel na nandoon ako. Para sakin ngayon, gagawin ko lahat," he added.

While he's set on doing everything in his power to give UE a better campaign, the responsibility of doing so doesn’t fall in his hands entirely.

With two incoming rookie big men, he's more than happy to play the "kuya" role in making sure the rest of the Red Warriors maintain discipline, a key
component to the brand of basketball head coach Derrick Pumaren wants to instill.

"Siguro alam naman ng lahat na nasa team kami ng Pumaren," De Leon said as Manong Derrick’s brother Dindo, also a former UE head coach, likewise sits on
he bench as an assistant.

"Unang-una is yung discipline lalo na sa mga plays namin, sa practices. Kasi kami matagal na kami eh so ahead ako sa kanila, mas alam ko yung mga rules na
nase-share ko sa kanila [rookies]," the 6'6" slotman added.

Failing to make the playoffs by the skin of their teeth in the last three seasons, De Leon is taking it personal to lead the Red Warriors to the next level this year.

He's even thinking maybe this batch can re-create the magic of Season 72 especially now with UE having not only one, but two Pumarens basically calling the shots.

"Iniisip ko na yun eh. Gusto ko bago ako umalis ng UE, kung hindi kami mag-champion, gusto ko maiba. Gusto ko makapasok na kami sa playoffs tulad nung mga
past years nung panahon pa ni coach Dindo lagi silang top 4," De Leon said.

Third time was never the charm for UE last year, but for RR, the drive for Final Four may succeed with a fourth attempt.

"This year confident ako," he said. "Confident ako with my teammates."

UE all set to move on from three years of heartaches

Missing the Final Four by a few games for the last three years has been nothing but tough for the University of the East.

Since Season 76, the Red Warriors have watched the playoffs thinking that if one or two plays went their way, they'd be one of the
four teams chasing the UAAP championship.

Not to extend their misery for a fourth straight year, the 2016 Red Warriors are going all out, ready to channel their inner DJ Khaled
in hopes of scoring a breakthrough for Season 79. As RR De Leon put it, "Isang lang masasabi ko sa kanila sa tuwing maguusap kami,
nobody loves a loser."

"Kahit si Manong [Derrick Pumaren] nagsasabi, walang may gusto sa mga talunan, yun lang. Kung gusto niyo lahat ng bagay sa inyo,
you need to win kasi pag nanalo ka, everything is gonna be okay," he added.

After all, winning is the great equalizer and if the Red Warriors do so in Season 79, the ghosts of missed chances in Season 76, Season 77,
and Season 78 will all be exorcised.

However, saying you'll win is one thing and actually doing it is another.

Fortunately, the Red Warriors seemed to have figured out what the did wrong in the last three seasons. "Parang excited kasi lagi eh,"
De Leon told ABS-CBN Sports. "Yung first round kasi, yun yung hindi namin nilalagay sa isip. Parehas nung both seasons namin kay coach Derrick."

"Siguro kasi ang first round namin is steady lang, kumbaga parang wala kami sa focus na kailangan na namin manalo (agad)," he added.

No truer words have ever been spoken regarding UE in the last three seasons as the Red Warriors are a combined 13-8 in the second round
compared to only 9-12 in the first.

In Season 77, they went 6-1 in the second round before losing by two points to eventual champion National University in the fourth-seed
playoff. "Hindi na pwede yung nagdadasal na naman tayo na sana may matalong ibang team," De Leon stressed.

"Hindi na kami maghihintay na may matalo pang iba para umangat kami," he added.

So what solution does the Red Warriors see to avoid getting their hearts broken four years in a row?

Easy, all they should do is win, win, win, no matter what. "So ngayon mine-mentally focused na namin yung team na kailangan first round
pa lang, nandun na," De Leon said.

"Kailangan lang namin manalo, manalo, manalo. Yun lang," he added.

UAAP Season 79: Try to keep up with the running and gunning UE Red Warriors

The University of the East Red Warriors are running.
It’s almost 11:00am here inside the UE Gym in Sampaloc, Manila and the Red Warriors have been huffing and puffing for nearly two hours now.
“Wala pa nga yan. Parang relax pa yan ngayon eh,” says second year guard Bon Batiller with a smile.
“That’s the way we’ve been playing,” Paul Varilla points out. “That’s the way we’re gonna play.”
The Red Warriors are running. And they’ve got no plans of stopping.

It’s no secret in the UAAP that UE has made it a habit to play fast-paced, high-octane, pedal-to-the-metal basketball. Year after year, they’ve made that part of their identity. It has been a staple for Coach Derrick Pumaren.
“It’s not only my expectation, but it’s a team expectation, that we will have a better finish this season compared to the first seasons ko with UE,” says Pumaren. “And we’re looking forward to making it into the Final Four.”
For the past two seasons under Pumaren, UE has fallen short making it into the playoffs. In both Season 77 and 78, they finished a game short of joining the coveted final four. Almost there, but not quite. Season 79 now offers a new beginning for Pumaren and his Red Warriors.

“It’s my team… Finally,” he says.
Pumaren shares that his lineup for the upcoming season is a team that he has built continuously in the last two seasons. Since inheriting the head coaching duties in 2014, he hasn’t had the chance to recruit, mold, and develop a team that he could call his own. This time around, he does not only have the team that he wants, but also the time. He picked the final 16 players for his roster earlier than before to get a step ahead on his preparations.
“The composition of the team was picked early. They’ve been already playing together 2-3 months na,” says the veteran coach.
His seasoned players Ronnie De Leon, Clark Delige, Renz Palma, Batiller, and Varilla, are among those who hoping to have an immediate impact this year alongside his rookies.
“Our chemistry started a while back, like towards the end of last season,” adds Varilla, who is now the team captain. “The team has getting together on and off the court.”
“It’s a different approach this season compared doon sa first two seasons ko,” Pumaren also shares, who is making a point this year to have a more focused and more determined squad. “I told them a month or two months ago, if they’re not with me, then the door is there. They have no business, no place in my team if they’re going to be like that. If they’re here just [to be] a member of the UE Red Warriors, huwag na. Kasi magkakahiyaan lang kami.”
With team chemistry, time, and experience, on their side, the Red Warriors have been focused on working on their practices and style of play. As always, they want to defend with pressure, attack quickly, and play fast basketball.

In today’s practice session, as in all their sessions, they are running consistently. They run a variety of fast plays. Whether it’s a made basket, missed shot, or even off a bricked free throw, they run relentlessly.
The team is constantly running, but they’re not running in circles either. Although they want to take on opposing defenses early, they still run plays efficiently and try to execute them each time. They just want to attack quicker than anybody else.

And there’s there the defense. A Pumaren trademark is the dreaded full court pressure defense. In this aspect, the Warriors also have different types of exercises to help them maintain their machine-like defensive approach.
“It’s a signature of the Pumarens,” says a grinning Varilla about their defensive mindset.
Last season, UE held opponents to 72.2 PPG and 39.9 percent shooting. They also made it a habit to make other teams commit a ton of miscues. They were able to get 6.4 steals per game and force about 26 turnovers from opponents.
“Wino-work talaga namin depensa namin kasi defense first kasi itong team na ito,” Batiller firmly says. “Sa offense, kailangan namin ma-convert yung mga na stops namin.”
Heading into Season 79, it’s clear that UE still wants to display full throttle basketball, but more importantly, they want to win this time around. As mentioned, they missed the Final Four the past two seasons by just a single win. Their main problem has been peaking as a team when it’s already too late in the season. In Season 77 two years ago, they were only 3-4 in the first round, but then figured things out come the second round whey finished 6-1, including winning the last five games. The year after that in Season 78, they were 2-5 in the first half of the season, before going 4-3 in round two.

“It’s very important that we have a good start. We have to start on a winning note because every game counts,” Pumaren affirms. “Di kami pwedeng to wait for the second round to make our move. That’s what happened to us that’s why we fell one win short the first two seasons. Laging second round kami parati nag pick up.”
For Season 79, Pumaren and the rest of the UE Red Warriors hope that they finally have that strong start they’re looking for. It’s well understood that they want to play fast, it’s just that they have to step on the gas pedal earlier this time.
“I’ve sent a message to them that this season – hindi kami magpapatalo. Whatever it takes, di kami magpapatalo. Mamatay kami for us to lose a ball game. That’s the attitude I want to instill in the players. That’s going to be my attitude right now,” says the determined Pumaren.
The UE Red Warriors are going full throttle this season.

A Family of Red Warriors, the Pumarens' UE Legacy:

The patriarch of the Pumaren Family, Filomeno Pumaren - played for Coach Baby Dalupan and had won UE's 2nd UAAP Title. Succeeded Baby Dalupan in Coaching UE in 1972. Was able to captured UE's 13th title in 1974, 14th in 1975, and the 15th in 1978.

Marietta Pumaren - the ever loving and supportive wife of Coach Filo is a UE alumna.

Jojo Pumaren - the eldest of the Pumaren siblings, is a UE Alumnus

Derek Pumaren - played for the UE Pages, played for the UE Red Warriors during the 1978- 1980 seasons with one championship to boot, former UE Consultant from Seasons 68-71, Current UE Head Coach.

Dindo Pumaren -former UE Head Coach from Seasons 68-71, architect of the rare 14-0 Season 70 UE Sweep of the elimination rounds, current UE Assistant Coach.

Pagod na kakapress mga players natin. In this game, it did more harm than good.

You cannot press the whole game, why?

You need to reshuffle your players all the time. Meaning yung mga streak at rhythm shooters hindi makakakuha ng kumpyansa nila, di pa nila nakukuha rhytym nila ilalabas na sila kasi pagod na.

At second, di tayo makakabuo ng core players talaga na magjjell. Kasi papalit palit ang nasa loob. Hindi magkaroon ng harmony. Walang solid 8 na masasabi na main players natin.

Need natin yun if makapasok tayo sa semis.

For all those who call for the ouster of Coach Derrick and his system. I beg to disagree. It's too early for this season to lose hope for our beloved UE Red Warriors.

No, it's not the system nor the recruitment woes. In fact, we got lots of prized recruits waiting in the Team B.

All of our defeats were all winnable ones. We've been only defeated by 6,1, and 8 points in three games.

So, what's going wrong for the Red Warriors?

FREE THROWS AND THREE-POINT SHOOTING.

In those three games, UE missed 31 free throws out of 81 tries, and missed 52 three-point shots out of 66 attempts.

And to think that the Red Warriors only lost by a total of 15 points in those three games, they could have easily won all of those games if not for those missed free throws, all the more if the Warriors were able to hit those trifectas.

All they need is to polish their free throw and three point shooting, and improved the perimeter defense 'coz our opponents have been killing us with their 3-point shooters...

And the most important of all, THE TEAM NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT. DON'T BE THE FIRST ONES TO GIVE UP ON THEM.

WE SHOULD STAND AND FIGHT WITH THEM!
