Returning Charles Mammie leads UE to win over Ateneo
InterAKTV · Wednesday, July 17, 2013 · 4:27 pm
UE center Charles Mammie, back after a one-game suspension, posted a big 20-20 performance and hit the deciding free throws late in the game to lead the Red Warriors to a big win over defending champion Ateneo, 72-68, in UAAP Season 76 action Wednesday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
With UE leading 70-68 in the final minute, Mammie came up with the biggest play, grabbing a miss from Roi Sumang and drawing a foul on Ateneo’s Frank Golla to earn a trip to the line. He knocked down both free throws that gave his team a four-point advantage with just 17 seconds to play.
Mammie finished with 20 points and 23 rebounds against an overmatched Ateneo frontline.
UE led by as much as 15 points in the third period after the Red Warriors opened the second half with a 9-0 blast.
But Ateneo, behind the hot shooting of Juami Tiongson, fought back to tie the game at 54-all at the end of the third quarter. Tiongson hit four three-pointers in the period.
The Blue Eagles made a fight of it in the fourth quarter, with hobbled leader Kiefer Ravena scoring on a three-pointer and a fastbreak layup to give Ateneo a 63-60 lead with 4:18 remaining.
But UE scored six straight points, mostly on free throws, to take a 66-63 lead.
Tiongson and Frank Golla hit back-to-back baskets to give Ateneo its last share of the lead but JM Noble and Sumang hit layups to put UE back on top.
Ravena earned a trip to the free throw line but could only make one-of-two before Mammie grabbed the key offensive rebound that sealed the game.
Tiongson led Ateneo with 17 points while Ravena, still working his way into game shape, finished with 11.
Sumang and Dan Alberto each scored 14 for UE.

The Mammie Returns as UE Warriors add to Blue Eagles' misery

CHARLES Mammie made a rousing return from a one-game suspension while Roi Sumang delivered in the clutch anew as University of the East scraped past Ateneo, 72-68, in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena Wednesday.
Mammie, the UE big man from Sierra Leone who was banned for one game for a scuffle with an Adamson player, returned with a vengeance with 20 points and 23 boards, including a crucial rebound down the stretch that allowed the Red Warriors to put away their second in five games.
The Warriors, who snapped a two-game skid, dealt the defending champion Eagles their fourth loss in five games.
“I have to be very consistent that we have to learn from the champions,” Warriors coach Boycie Zamar said.
JM Noble scored the go-ahead basket for UE, a layup with a little over a minute remaining in the game, before Sumang converted on a daredevil drive and a contested layup that gave the Warriors a 70-67 lead.
Sumang finished with 14 points, four boards, and three assists.

Re: UAAP Season 76
Pati yung taga UA&P and DLSU. Saya lang!
Ugly win for the Warriors but we will take that.
Sana mas maganda na depensa natin vs DLSU this sat!
Go Fight Red and White!

Re: UAAP Season 76
Nagiging lackluster si Olivares... ilayo nyo sya kay sumido at nahahawa ata... hehe... parang palagi ng pagod tong si Olivares, nabuburn out kaya to?
At last Olayon and Alberto is back!
W-O-W. and the CONCENTRATION, parang may tapalodo sya ngayon, walang signs of distraction eh...
Last but not the least, I have to tip my hat to Noble. He redeemed himself (kahit slow-mo yung go-ahead basket nya, ayos na yun... haha). His being a liability has been lessened today. Good job!
The kind of perimeter defense we showed kanina wouldn't work against a determined FEU team. Kanina ang ganda ng mga crisp passing ng FEU against NU around the arc, pati mga kickout pass from drives, pati mga plays for set-up 3pointers coming off screens for mendoza, tolomia, and romeo... alam na alam nila yung roles and plays for them... our team still has a LOT of work to do on defense outside the paint.
Looking forward for a good one on Saturday.
Congratulations UE Red Warriors!

Re: UAAP Season 76
2. free throw 8-18 yata tayo sabi nung announcer.
8. noble, hmmm try harder. hehehe

Re: UAAP Season 76

My brother said after UE def.
My Answer: try nila bulbol nila, tyak Lilipad sila!

UE tie-up in the offing as Zamar named new coach of Cebuana Lhuillier
By Reuben Terrado
July 18, 2013, 06:25 pm
UNIVERSITY of the East fortified its future after Boycie Zamar was named as head coach of Cebuana Lhuillier in the PBA D-League.
Zamar confirmed to Spin.ph he will take over the coaching reigns of the Gems next conference from Beaujing Acot, who will concentrate full-time on his chores as team manager.
The UE mentor said a school tie-up with Cebuana is also in the offing, which he believes will be beneficial to the Warriors’ future.
“Blessing para sa amin ‘yan that you have a core of players na may pag-asa mag-D-League.”
Zamar is nothing new to Cebuana Lhuillier as he served as assistant coach to Aric Del Rosario when the firm backed the national men’s team campaign during the 2003 Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam.
He was later elevated to head coach when the company also backed the national team bound for the 2005 SEA Games that failed to see action meet after the country was suspended by the world governing body Fiba.
Zamar's son and former UE Red Warrior Paul saw action for the Gems in the Foundation Cup last summer.
The Warriors coach is expected to bring some of his players to the D-League including UE’s leading scorer Roi Sumang. Zamar said he sees no problem in recruiting UE players for the Gems as some of the schools are doing the same.
“Wala naman akong nakikitang problema kasi developmental talaga. Malaking factor kung titignan mo from a basketball standpoint,” said Zamar.
