Re: UAAP Season 76
UE one of the teams to watch in UAAP cage wars
June 19, 2013 4:18 pm
After an impressive preseason campaign, University of the East (UE) is now considered as one of the title contenders in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 76 men’s basketball tournament which starts June 29 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The Red Warriors recently ruled the FilOil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup, dethroning the National University Bulldogs.
The victory serves as a good springboard going into the UAAP wars but coach Boycie Zamar remains modest. “It’s not an assurance. We need to work hard to achieve our goals in the UAAP,” Zamar said.
Prolific point guard Roi Sumang, who was the Most Valuable Player in the Premier Cup, is one of the players to watch this season. Last year, he was No. 3 in scoring with an average of 18.4 per game on 40.4 (2-point), 35.4 (3-point) and 5.1 (free throw) shooting percentages.
The 5-foot-8 Sumang was second in assists with a 5.4 average and third in steals with 1.4.
Besides Sumang, UE will be powered by the 6-foot-7 Sierra Leone native Charles Mammie and veterans John Michael Noble, Chris Javier, Lord Casajeros, Ralf Olivarez, Adrian Santos, Jairold Flores and Jhon Rey Sumido.
The rookies are La Salle Greenhills’ Mario Emmanuel Bonleon, Hope Christian High School’s Leo Guion and San Sebastian College-Recoletos’ Gino Jumao-as.
In Season 75, the Red Warriors finished with a 3-11 mark to share sixth place with Adamson University. One of those victories was their 79-77 upset win over the defending champions Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles.
As part of its build-up, UE went through a series of invitational games in Malaysia, Taiwan and Indonesia. They also ruled the 9th Asian University Championships held in Manila in October last year.
UE will open its campaign against Far Eastern University at 2 p.m. on opening day.

Re: UAAP Season 76

Lord's prayer: UE 'prodigal son' Casajeros keen to make most of second chance
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
LORD Casajeros is keen to make the most of his second chance at University of the East after being welcomed back to the fold by Red Warriors coach Boycie Zamar.
The 23-year-old Casajeros left the school under mysterious circumstances prior to the 2012 season under then-head coach Jerry Codinera, but is relishing a new lease on life to his career given by Zamar.
“Umalis talaga ako pero ngayon, nakabalik ako,” Casajeros told Spin.ph without elaborating on what had led to the parting of ways last season.
What is clear, however, is that he will be a welcome addition to Zamar's team.
Casajeros, a 6-1 forward from Laguna, has been known as a no-nonsense defender who more often than not takes on the top offensive threats from opposing teams.
He also became an unlikely offensive spark for the Red Warriors during the finals of the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup, scoring 16 points in an 81-68 victory over the defending champion National University Bulldogs.
“Ang hirap ng pinagdaanan ko noong nakaalis ako ng UE," said Casajeros. "Pero since dumating si coach Boycie, binigyan niya ako ng opportunity na makabalik ako.”
Casajeros is expected to be part of the Warriors' UAAP lineup in his final year as a collegiate player, and he's determined to make it count this time.
“Last year ko na ngayon kaya masarap,” he said.

Re: UAAP Season 76

Zamar in, Caidic and Sauler out in Ginebra coaching shuffle
BOYCIE Zamar is set to come in as an assistant coach at Ginebra in a coaching shuffle that would have longtime Kings assistants Juno Sauler and Allan Caidic moving out to go full time with De La Salle in the UAAP, sources said.
Zamar recently led a resurgent University of the East to a preseason championship and has been invited to join Alfrancis Chua's coaching staff (and not San Miguel's in the ABL as earlier reported by Spin.ph).
Ginebra management is still in the process of screening other prospects to fill the rest of the vacancies in the staff in what could be the start of a reorganization that should also affect Petron and San Mig Coffee.
Sauler, who recently replaced Gee Abanilla at La Salle, will now focus on the Green Archers where he will have Caidic as assistant. Caidic initially came on board as shooting coach for the Archers.
Sauler had previously said he wanted to hold on to his role as Ginebra assistant.
Spin.ph had earilier reported that former Indonesia Warriors coach Todd Purves is in negotiations with Petron to take on a consultant role behind Abanilla, who will be tapped to replace Olsen Racela.
Racela, in turn, will be moved to San Mig to serve as an understudy to Tim Cone.
The coaching shuffle at Ginebra follows a major trade pulled off by the Kings, who acquired Japeth Aguilar from Globalport while giviing up rookie Yousif Taha and Elmer Espiritu.

Re: UAAP Season 76
The assistant coaching stint with our rival patron's team is not a welcome addition. I find it a conflict of interest, although not direct. But all I can do is wish Coach Z the best, because basically, that's the best I can do, and UE as well... *sigh*
