Red Warriors lose but they sure look scary

By: Jude Roque

In what may be the best game in the UAAP’s Season 77 so far, defending champion La Salle needed the endgame heroics of Jeron Teng to escape with a 60-58 win over the University of the East. But more than the Green Archers notching their second close victory in four games, this game was more about the Red Warriors dominating almost the entire time and showing the UAAP that they are a solid title contender this year.

Like real warriors in battle, UE looked really scary in this game, mainly due to its mettle and aggressiveness. Credit must go to the coaching staff, especially former La Salle head coach Derrick Pumaren (and with younger brother and former UE coach Dindo as his deputy), for turning things around for the team in a short period of time. He took over the coaching chores for UE just a few months before the season opening.

As expected, the Red Warriors unleashed the patented Pumaren full-court press, which was mostly responsible for the Green Archers’ horrendous 36 turnovers in the game. If they can force this many errors on La Salle, which in my opinion is the most poised team in the league, then they have to be feared by the rest of the field.

For 40 minutes the Warriors were relentless in their pressure defense. Occasionally, the Archers would manage to break the press. But UE showed in this game that the defending titlists were vulnerable to pressure. Perhaps Thomas Torres could have made some difference in the game if he had played. Still, the Warriors are slowly being able to master this dreaded defensive ploy made popular by Pumaren during his three-peat championship stint with La Salle in the early 90’s.

It’s not just the full-court press however that makes UE so scary. It’s also the presence of their big men, particularly African recruits Charles Mammie and Moustapha Arafat, and 6’5” veteran Chris Javier. You see, La Salle is a heavy favorite because of their imposing post players namely Arnold Van Opstal, Jason Perkins, Norbert Torres and Yutien Andrada. But UE is one team that can match up with DLSU well. In Sunday’s encounter, La Salle’s usually deadly duo of AVO and Perkins could only combine for seven points. So aside from their turnovers, the Green Archers’ strength inside was also neutralized by UE.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

When the main big men – Mammie, Arafat, Perkins, Van Opstal – fouled out one after the other late in the payoff period, the advantage clearly swung to La Salle’s side. Although Almond Vosotros struggled with his shots, Teng was able to save the day for La Salle with his unstoppable drives. He also made a couple of excellent passes to rookie Prince Rivero, who was able to convert on both occasions. Norbert Torres also took advantage of the situation (fouling out of Mammie and Arafat), as he was able to secure some crucial rebounds and score on putbacks. All this accounted for that great La Salle comeback in the final few minutes of the game.

Of course, the Red Warriors must improve on their offense especially in crunch time. I actually like their plays. They had several good looks and open shots. But they just could not make their mark in the end. UE only had three successful field goals in the fourth quarter. Even the sensational Roi Sumang was atrocious in the end game. And the other respectable gunners in UE's roster went blank as well in the last ten minutes of play. But this team does have potent outside shooters like Dan Alberto and Pedrito Galanza. When UE's guns are on target, it will be tough to upend.

And when the going gets tough, the Green Archers shine more. The poise that they could not find in the first three quarters came through for them in the last period. It’s amazing that La Salle still managed to pull off the win even with 36 turnovers.

Watch out, however, for UE. They may have absorbed their first loss in the tournament but from what we saw in the game, the Red Warriors are legit threats to the Green Archers’ throne.

Even if we have lost the game last Sunday, the Warriors was able to prove that they are one of the team to beat this year. We have shown everyone that we have all the arsenal to win it all.

OK, lets move forward...

Next game is on Wednesday (July 30) against FEU.

FEU are still a strong team even after the departure of their 2 leading scorers last year. Actually I think it suited them much better not having a "star player" on their line up. Coach Nash was able to place a system of a perfect team play. FEU plays like an international team. Full of cuts and passes in the middle with kickout passes when closed out. They space the floor very well the allows alot of open looks for their shooters.

I think the Warriors have what it takes to beat them on both ends of the floor. They have excellent press and halfcourt defense and they have alot of scoring options. Hopefully the wont get overly excited (gigil) the entire game.

Im excited to see the Warriors bounce back kaso baka sa reply ko na lng mapanood. sa twitter na lng ako makikibalita

The season is still long to way to go.. But the way our players played last Sunday is something that we should be proud of.. DLSU (even with the 0-2 starts early this season) is still a power house team considering their solid Line Up and they are the defending champion. So Kudos to our Team, the coaching Staff and extended to our crowds who never let DLSU gallery na ma out cheered tayo.. Sarap manood ng games kung ganun kaganda ang lahat.. except off course dun sa inbound pass violation na di tinawagan ng referee which resulted to 3 points for DLSU...Justice should be serve., Let that referee face the consequence of his negligence.. Binabayaran siya to do his job, so no excuse can be accepted. Pero it's not DLSU fault anyway.. as there are so many calls na I must admit "sobrang nipis" naman which favored both squad.. A win is still a win.. Congratulations to the Green Archers for the win and Let's Move on then look forward for much exciting games ahead.. BOMBA UE Igma Kadima!

Nice posts radic and carljacob.

But I beg to disagree on that controversial play.

They must be in the same out of bound line. Ang kailangan bantayan dun eh yung 5 second rule. Hindi sya magrereset kahit napasa sa 2nd inbounding player.

At ang isa pang bawal sa inbounding player eh dapat di sya nya magtravel.

And another thing, that kind of inbound pass should and could only be done after a field goal and a free-throw attempt

The game replay the inbound play was after a gino jumao-as offensive foul i believe.

So clearly may violation dun ..

tsk..

The Controversial out of bounds pass by the Green Archers at the 1:10 mark of the second quarter should have been merited with an inbound violation. According to the NBA and FIBA Rule Books this kind of pass is ONLY ALLOWED AFTER A MADE FIELD GOAL AND A MADE FREE THROW. But the DLSU pass was made after the Gino Jumao-as offensive foul! The play should have been called for a violation!!!! Bitterness aside, we could have won that ball game!!!!

According to the NBA Rule book: c. After a score, field goal or free throw, the latter coming as the result of a personal foul, any player of the team not credited with the score shall put the ball into play from any point out-of-bounds at the endline of the court where the point(s) were scored. He may pass the ball to a teammate behind the endline; however, the five-second throw-in rule applies. (http://www.nba.com/analysis/rules_8.html?nav=ArticleList)

According to the FIBA Rule book: 17.2.7 Following a successful field goal or a successful last or only free throw: Any player of the non-scoring team shall take the throw-in at any place behind that team’s endline. This is also applicable after an official hands or places the
ball at the disposal of the player taking the throw-in after a time-out or after any interruption of the game following a successful field goal or a successful last or only free throw (http://www.fiba.com/pages/eng/fc/FIBA/ruleRegu/p/openNodeIDs/897/selNodeID/897/baskOffiRule.html)

I doubt magkaka-rematch. Sanctions or warnings sa refs siguro meron. The UAAP must make sure that games are officiated fairly and properly. Ang ninipis talaga ng tawag. After that Mammie unsportmanlike foul, hindi na naman nila pinapansin yung mga unneccessary contacts ng players sa isa't-isa. Ang labo talaga ng officiating last game and isa sa naging deciding factors sa outcome ng laro yun.

Sana maging maganda ang UE-FEU matchup just like last season's classic 2OT match. Both teams are evenly matched in my opinion and I agree that FEU is adapting an int'l. style of play. Watchout also the snipers of FEU. Doon nahirapan ang Red Warriors last season.

Questionable talaga yung officiating nung 4th qtr.

Sa FEU game, Mammie and Arafat can dominate the floor, Pero they have to keep in mind na ang big mens ng feu can spread out the floor, Cruz, Escoto may Perimeter and even 3 point shooting also there forwards such as pogoy, belo, reymar jose.

Spread out defense kailangan dito. On the Guard side, we can match them all.
