University of the East spikers lead Petron volley semifinalists
c/o spin.ph

University of the East duo Francislyn Cais and Krycel Cueva scored a four-game sweep of their elimination-round assignments to barge into the semifinals of the third leg of the 2014 Petron Ladies’ Beach Volleyball tournament. The UE tandem’s fast-paced plays allowed them to start off with a 21-12 stopping of San Beda-2’s Shannen Lim and Camille de la Pena, before notching three more victories in Group B and clinch a berth in the knockout semifinal round of the beach volley fiesta backed by Petron, Mikasa Balls, and the De La Salle-Health Sciences Institute. They pulled off a 21-17 beating of Letran-2’s Ethel Evangelista and Mikaela Lopez, and then notched a 21-6 pounding of Emilio Aguinaldo College-2’s Yvonne Reyes and Arnie Yumul, before capping their run of victories with a 21-11 edging of La Salle-Dasmarinas alumni spikers Rosebiege Mendoza and Shiela Mae Nanquil. Their run of wins put them in the semifinals with Far Eastern University standouts Bernadette Pons and teammate Charm Simborio, whose impressive frontline game allowed them to also post a four-game sweep in Group A. “Tinibayan namin ang defense sa frontline kaya nakalusot kami,” said Cais, a 21-yearold management senior student. Pons and Simborio concluded their elimination stint in Group A with a 21-12 flogging of Adolfo and Gorospe to formally enter the semis against EAC 2’s Reyes and Yumul, who ended Group B with a 3-1 win-loss slate. On the other hand, EAC 1’s Charmille Belleza and Clara Camille Lozada put away San Beda College’s Debbie Dultra and Carmina Rebolledo, in their last Group A match to earn a 3-1 slate and arrange a semifinal clash with UE’s Cais and Cueva. The winners and runners-up of the third leg will earn berths in the Petron Beach Volleyball Battle of Champions late this year.

Meet the budding army of the UE Lady Warriors

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

MANILA — The recruitment wars were in full-swing last May when different coaches from different UAAP teams flew all the way from Manila to Davao to snag some of the most talented spikers from all over the country participating in the 2015 Palarong Pambansa.

Considering how the University of the East performed in Season 77, everyone expected to see its head coach Francis Vicente to be present, too, in an attempt to beef up his own roster. Surprisingly, the coach was a no-show.

But if you think that his absence means accepting defeat in recruiting some of the top up-and-coming athletes, think again.

Rivals visited the training of the Lady Warriors last Friday at their humble home in Recto and we were pleasantly surprised to see a good number of tall and athletic athletes training with the old familiars like Shaya Adorador and Roselle Baliton.

Vicente, apparently, was silently building an Army, making sure most of the volleybelles from Southern Tagalog will all head to his squad.

Get to know 10 of the newest UE Lady Warriors by clicking next on the slide.

With 10 recruits, UE volleyball goes full swing in rebuilding
by Mac Dionisio on June 22, 2015

MANILA — WIth an unofficial count of 10 committed freshmen, it can be said that University of the East is one of the big winners of the volleyball recruitment wars for class 2015-16.

Despite skipping this year’s Palarong Pambansa, Lady Warriors head coach Francis Vicente has proven his deep connections within the high school community after getting a big haul of tall athletes mostly coming from the Southern Tagalog region.

This, according to Vicente, is probably because of the reputation he has made in honing some of the most popular volleybelles in the country who all came from the south like DIndin Santiago, Alyssa Valdez and Kim Fajardo.

“Siguro dala na rin ‘yung development nung mga nanggaling sa UST. Alam mo naman ‘yung mga ‘yun mostly kinukuha ko sila sa STACAA eh. Hindi ako kumukuha sa north. Puro ako south.” the coach told Rivals.

“Siguro dahil nakikita nila na wow, puro mga south ‘yung nakukuha kaya pag punta ko ng south, alam na nila,” he added. “Siguro din kumakalat ‘yung systema na nag-aalaga ako ng player. Hindi ako pabaya. Basta pag kumuha ako ng player, when I talk to them, okay. We’ll be there.”

After failing to take home at least a solitary win in the UAAP Season 77, the coach has made tough calls and decisions to revamp the team to make it more competitive.

On who is not returning next season for the Lady Warriors, he says, “Apat ang nawala from last season. Sina Manansala, Juanillo, Dawis at Ponon.”

And though there are 10 holdovers still training with the Recto squad from last season, no one is assured of a spot in the final lineup as it will be a survival of the fittest for Vicente’s new and improved training pool.

“Ang matitira lang siguro diyan ‘yung siyam. Sila Baliton, Nebrea, Olarve, Adorador, Alcayde, Dacaymat at ‘yung liberong dalawa,” he said. “Mga lima ang bago kong ipapasok. ‘Yung recruit from Palaro plus recruit from Cavite plus maybe recruit from Marikina. Last ‘yung walk-in na galing Batangas.”

Talking about the reality of the game, Vicente opened up about the possibility of still not making it to the post-season on his sophomore year at the helm of the Lady Warriors.

His third year, though, will be a totally different story for he believes that his team will be ripe for a Final Four finish by then.

“‘Yung sinabi ko noon na three to five years, ‘yung third year niyan ang tao magbubulungan na ‘yan. Biglang lalaki na lang ang mata,” he said confidently. “Marami pa rin magsasabi ng negatibo na mahina pa ‘yan. Pero tignan natin. Kasi after this year, next year marami nang papasok na talagang totally hindi mo na siya makikitaan ng maliliit eh. Puro matatangkad na.”

“Kasi ngayon meron akong inaalagaan na grade 10. Nasa bahay siya nakatira. Ipinagkatiwala sa akin ng mga magulang,” he added, talking about his next project. “Kababayan ni Myla Pablo ‘yun. Mas matangkad pa kay Myla. She is 5’11” na ngayon and she’s still growing.”

With the doubters of the former UST high school coach having a feast after UE placed eighth for the third-straight year last season in the UAAP, the coach shrugs off all the bashing saying it is tough to turn the cellar-dwellers into becoming a competitive team but nothing gets him going more than a tough challenge.

“Ang sarap nung challenge!” he exclaimed.

“Hopefully dito ‘yung next kong legacy,” shared Vicente. “Isipin mo pag nai-angat mo ulit ito, iba na. Iba na ‘yung dating nun. Parang bigyan mo na lang ang ng plaque of recognition.”

“Natapos na ‘yung misyon ko NU. Meron akong panibagong misyon which is UE. Tignan natin kung talagang God’s will na manatili ako dito ng mas matagal pa.” he closed. — Rivals 2015

Team captain Shaya Adorador on UE rookies: Nanliit ako
by Abbie Barcelona on June 22, 2015

MANILA — After finishing last for the third straight year, University of the East, despite having had a new coach in Francis Vicente, is still looking for a breakout season in the UAAP.

But with Vicente scoring a total of 10 recruits mostly from Southern Tagalog, the competition is about to get tighter in the collegiate wars of the UAAP as even the cellar-dwellers try to become a real contender.

The expectations, though, should be downplayed a little if team captain Shaya Adorador could have it her way, especially since they are still in the process of learning the basics of the sport.

“Actually meron na eh kaso ayoko muna sabihin. Mahirap po mag bitaw ng salita,” shared Adorador on the team’s goal come Season 78. “Summer training po tuloy tuloy and may bagong sistema si coach na pinapa-train samin every day. ‘Yung pahinga lang namin is yung weekends.”

Though branded as the underdogs of the league, Adorador, along with the holdovers from last season and the incoming recruits hope to one day get out of the bottom of the rankings and eventually make it back to the Final Four after eight long years.

And speaking of recruits, the 5-foot-8 outside hitter shared how she felt the first time the up-and-coming stars of the Recto squad joined them in training.

“Ang tatangkad! Nanliit ako!” she quipped.

“Sobrang nakakatuwa kasi enjoy lang sila sa training. Sobrang mababait. Magagalang naman po sila. Masisipag at matiya-tiyaga,” she added, singing praises for the towering freshmen. “Sabi ni coach sa kanila magtiyaga lang, matiyaga naman.”

With outstanding talents inserted into the training pool of the Lady Warriors, Adorador said this development assures no one of a spot in the final lineup for the UAAP.

“Wala pa kame yung anim anim, wala pa po. Ngayon ano pa lang po kame, yung talagang basics kaya hindi pa namin alam kung makakapag work kame as a team.” she shared.

Having chosen to stay with UE despite having other choices, Adorador is now tasked to lead the squad to new heights that her predecessors have failed to do so.

Asked if the pressure, in any way, is getting into her, the bubbly skipper nonchalantly said the success of the team does not depend solely on her.

On the team’s chemistry, she says, “Hindi yung tipong may captain ball, hindi lang ako yung nagwowork. Talagang sila sumusunod din sila kung anong ipagawa ni coach.”

“Ang sinasabi lang sa akin ni coach siguro nandun na ‘yung pressure eh, embrace ko lang and then basta masasanay lang din po ako.” added the incoming junior.

“Hine-help naman ako ni coach para i-handle ‘yung team. Sobrang enjoy naman po.” she closed. — Rivals 2015

IN PHOTOS: ‘New and improved’ UE shows grit in win over EARIST
by Rivals PH on July 6, 2015

MANILA — The effect of head coach Francis Vicente’s volleyball program is starting to be felt when University of the East recovered from a third set meltdown to rout Eulogio Amang Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology Sunday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.

Ahead two sets to none, the UE Lady Warriors showed complacency and got buried to a 2-10 deficit which the opponent took advantage of, threatening to extend the match to a fourth frame.

Without having to call any timeout, the Recto squad persevered to tie the match at 21-all and eventually win it all, 25-17, 25-22, 27-25.

Francis Vicente lauds UE rookies, veterans for quickly adapting to his program
by Mac Dionisio on July 5, 2015

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

MANILA — Sunday’s opener of the 2015 Philippine National Games at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium served as the debut of the ‘new and improved’ University of the East women’s volleyball team.

With his 10 recruits in tow, UE head coach Francis Vicente and the rest of the holdovers from Season 77 showcased their wares, nipping EARIST in straight sets, 25-17, 25-22, 27-25.

But more than the prestige of winning, the entire campaign, according to the coach, is for the young squad to gain more experience before they head on to the next round of the UAAP.

“‘Yung skills nila, nandun pero kulang pa sa kumpiyansa. They need to have high self-confidence. Makukuha ‘yan through experience eh. Hindi naman makukuha ‘yan through training lang.” said Vicente on his assessment on the Lady Warriors’ performance.

Proudly, he adds, “They need more exposure. For me, I think the team is getting there. It’s a strong and tall team. Ang kailangan lang is more exposure.”

Down 2-10 in the last frame, the Recto squad showed signs of complacency after winning the first two sets.

But surprisingly, instead of going its usual route of giving the set away by a large margin, the Lady Warriors showed grit as they tied the score at 21-all and eventually won the set and the match.

“Tambak na pero hinabol. Ang UE usually pag tinambakan mo ng ganun wala ng gana. Pero hindi na. Ngayon makikita mo ‘yung pagkakaiba eh.” said the incoming second year mentor.

“Tinest ko dun. Kahit sino ipasok ko, umaangat pa rin ‘yung team kahit nage-error,” he added. “Ang kailangan lang bawasan ‘yung error through training and analysis of their game para magkaron ng perfection of movements.”

But though the volleyball community is closely following the incoming rookies of UE, it was the duo of Roselle Baliton and skipper Shaya Adorador that towed the team past the pesky defense of the opponent.

Baliton, who is at 6 feet tall, has shown tremendous improvement in her agility and more notably in her floor defense now that she remains in the back line without the need to be subbed by a libero.

“Pina-practice ko siya mag backline attack. So kumbaga, ‘yung totality ng kanyang pagiging player pinapaganda,” revealed Vicente on Baliton’s wider arsenal. “Huwag naman ‘yung ilalabas mo just because hindi siya marunong mag receive. Kumbaga sa akin, kailangan may confidence din siyang dumepensa. Kasi kung kailangan ko siya sa backline attack, dapat dedepensa.”

Vicente also took the chance to give props to his team captain Adorador for stepping up to the plate as the leader of the pack.

“Kasi na-expose siya sa Philips Gold. She’s been with Michele Gumabao and Melissa Gohing. Nakita niya ano ibig sabihin ng isang leader,” he said. “Ang leader ba tatahimik na lang? Nakita niya sa Philips Gold ‘yun. ‘Yung advantage na naglaro siya dun malaki. Tapos ang kasama niya dun puro malalakas na players.”

Assuring his team that there is no expectations for them to win the whole tournament, Vicente is just elated to see that the fruits of his and his squad’s hard work is starting to pay off.

“Unti-unti nang nararamdaman ‘yung epekto ng program ko. Pero I know kulang pa. Ang kailangan lang nila maging masunurin lang at maging mabilis mag adapt sa tinuturo.” he closed. — Rivals 2015

UE rookie Seth Rodriguez out to prove she is more than just a pretty face
by Abbie Barcelona on July 7, 2015

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

MANILA — For University of the East head coach Francis Vicente, he has found UAAP volleyball’s next Rachel Daquis — a student-athlete that has both exemplary skills and good looks — in incoming rookie Seth Rodriguez.

Hearing this from Rivals, Rodriguez can’t help but blush with the comparison to one of the most popular sports figure in the country, who is part of the national team and at the same time has graced magazine covers left and right.

“Siyempre masaya kasi parang, Rachel ‘yun eh. Rachel Daquis, may pangalan na, may name na,” she said wide-eyed. “Pero at the same time pressure. Nakaka-pressure din kasi si Rachel Daquis nga ‘yun eh. Tapos ako nag start pa lang din ako.”

Towering at 5-foot-10, it was not surprising when Rodriguez shared she used to be a model and has walked the runway a couple of times for some local brands.

On how she was discovered as a ramp model, she says, “Galing ako ng school. Naglalakad lang ako pauwi tapos parang hinarang lang ako bigla tapos tinanong kung gusto ko daw mag model.”

With a sweet smile that highlights her dimples, she adds, “Nag go-see kami sa Makati tapos ayun na ‘yung agency ko.”

The glitz and the glamour of modeling would have to take a backseat, though, now that the Cavite native has been taken under the wings of Francis Vicente, the genius behind volleyball superstars like Alyssa Valdez, Kim Fajardo and Dindin Santiago-Manabat.

“Ang balak ko kasi mag focus muna ako sa volleyball tsaka sa studies,” said the first year Tourism student.

Admitting to initially feeling unsure on which road to take, she adds, “Parang ano bang gagawin ko? Tama ba ‘tong ginagawa ko? ‘Yung parang sobrang nakakakaba din.”

Thankfully, the Lady Warriors, who she now treats as her second family, has been more than supportive, showing her she made the right decision to join the competitive world of collegiate volleyball.

“Sobrang nakakatulong sila kasi nili-lift up nila ‘yung confidence ko. Parang sinasabi nila kaya kong gawin ‘yung mga dapat gawin dun sa loob.” she said.

Now that she has successfully made it past her baptism of fire inside the court after UE’s back-to-back wins in the 2015 Philippine National Games, Rodriguez is determined to learn the ropes and be more than just a pretty face for the Recto squad.

“Kailangan ko pa ng experience tsaka exposure para mas maging confident sa mga susunod na games.” said the middle blocker.

Wanting to go beyond expectations, Rodriguez closed by saying “Inspiration ko si Daquis ngayon.” — Rivals 2015

New setter Dana Disquitado to play crucial part in UE’s ‘resurgence’
by Abbie Barcelona on July 11, 2015

MANILA — University of the East may not have finished at the podium of the recently concluded 2015 Philippine National Games but its head coach Francis Vicente was beaming with pride in saying that it was still ‘mission accomplished.’

After finishing at the bottom of the standings in Season 77, Vicente made a major revamp in the Lady Warriors’ lineup starting with his 10 recruits from the southern Tagalog region.

With a taller roster in the PNG, the Recto squad made it past the first round unscathed and even threaten to break into the top four but to no avail.

“As I’ve said, exposure game so wala pa naman kasi sila dun sa ensayo na gitna nung programa. Wala pa sila.” the coach told Rivals.

With such a young set of players, it was no surprise when Vicente shared that it was actually the first time these student-athletes are playing together in an actual tournament.

“Ang ginagawa lang nila puro basic so actually this is their first time. Eto ‘yung first time nila na nag anim-an sila na talagang ‘yung first six nabuo na,” he said. “So ‘yun, hindi pa talaga ‘yun ‘yung starting six. Hindi pa. Itong part na ito is an evaluation kung ano pa ang kulang.”

Showing so much promise during the elimination round, UE sputtered in the quarterfinals and yielded to Jose Rizal University in four sets.

Lack of confidence and experience, according to Vicente, was what did them in during the do-or-die battle.

“Nakikita namin ang kulang is, as I said before, more on the psychological aspect kasi the skills are already there eh.” assessed the coach.

“Sometimes players are so overwhelmed they forget to be a competitive person so ‘yun ‘yung nangyari diyan. Nakalimutan nila ‘yung competitiveness ng game,” he added. “Hindi ko naman sinasabing napabayaan kundi parang relaxed masyado. Parang ‘yung contentment wala ng push pa eh. Kulang pa sa experience.”

And while other coaches would focus more on their attackers, Vicente pointed out that his new setter, Dana Disquitado, will be the one to make or break the young team.

“Ang kailangan lang mangyari ‘yung setter kailangan lang turuan dumiskarte ng maayos kasi naninibago pa siya dun sa sistema ko eh.” said the former UST girls’ volleyball team coach.

“‘Yung setter training nandun pa lang sila sa basic. Wala pa sa tactic and technique,” he added. “‘Yung evaluation ano ba ‘yung narating nitong bata na ‘to nung high school siya? Dun kami magfofocus ngayon. Kamukha nyan nakita namin ‘yung setter minsan nawawala sa focus. We need to tell them na the setter is the most intelligent person sa loob ng court so dapat malaman niya ‘yun.”

Now that off-season tournaments are happening left and right, the Lady Warriors will join as much as they could to gain the much-needed exposure before the UAAP.

Wanting to go the slowly-but-surely route, the coach said there is only one goal come Season 78: to win.

“Ayoko na magbanggit ng rank eh. Ang importante dun kailangan mag step up na sila na kahit man lang isang game manalo, he said. “Manalo, isa, dalawa, tatlong game basta kailangan manalo sila ng game whether it’s five sets, three sets, four sets.”

“Basta ang importante manalo ng game.” he closed. — Rivals 2015

May pagka "Yeng Guaio" to si Coach Francis. Bak challenge yan sa mga Seniors natin (Baliton at Adorador) to step up.

May kumakausap yata sa kanyang taga NU eh.
