UP over UE 62-55

That was a struggle to watch in the first quarter, still the boys fought back -- never backed down till the end. Those Vito 3s killed our momentum, still this is a young team that's going to learn and be better in time.

Negatives:
FREETHROWS - can't count how many we missed.

Scoring - Paul Varilla and De leon played a bad game especially when they are counted upon to be consistent this season.

Turnovers - expected from a young team but still we need to lessen them.

Positives:

Batiller and Manalang - i am comfortable going forward with these 2 guards. they will only get better with games.

Javier - still makes the occasional lapses but he looks like he wants to end his uaap career on a high note. let's hope he plays better and more consistent.

Dunno but that UP squad remains me of a Coach Zamar sytle of play? Anyway, our team is really young, and small; and the lack of a go-to-guy; and a vocal leader on the court are what we are missing. Long way to go for this squad.

UAAP Season 78: UE Red Warriors, The New Beginning Empty Re: UAAP Season 78: UE Red Warriors, The New Beginning

Post by icemint Sun Sep 06, 2015 12:10 pm

I swear, that's the longest 1st quarter i've ever watched.

lol

Just my thoughts about the game yesterday:
1. Maraming kapos na jumpshots and missed free-throws.

2. Walang gusto tumira, may plays na over-passing.

Those where uncalled for.

4. The UP Defense surprised us. Ang dami nilang nakuhang turnovers. They were able to guard the passing lanes thus resulting to steals and converted tos.
5. And the officiating was bad. Really. That Fran Yu offensive foul? Tsk.

6. Philip Manalang was spectacular as expected. I believe he’s going to be a shoo-in for the Rookie of the Year Award.

7. Our rookies have lots of potential. Ilang beses nyo man narinig na to, the future is bright for the Warriors.

8. Ilang beses na namin to pinaalala sa UE crowd every year na lang. Manalo o matalo, huwag muna umalis ng venue, pls. Please sing your Alma Mater first before leaving the venue. Pakiusap Warriors. Tumayo pag kinakanta ang Alma Mater Hymn ng opposing team and pumalakpak after.

Ayun.

How about you guys, your thoughts?

Don’t fret guys it’s only our first game of the season, and opening-game jitters hit us. Our rookies proved that they compete with the veteran-laden UP Fighting Maroons.

It’s a great game nonetheless. So don’t stop supporting our beloved UE Red Warriors.

Hmm..

ugly game last sat against UP, Javier Low BB IQ and too slow in the post. Terrible FT (mga 10 missed FT). the shooting percentage is one of the horrible stats in UE RW history. And yet Coach Pumaren is confident in landing a spot in the F4 Smile

I hope we will not end up 0 - 14 in Season 78

Pumaren 14-0:0-14 Pumaren???

I think that UP game was winnable.

If not for those 3 consecutive 3pts by Vito baka lamang pa tayo given na pumasok lahat ng free thwos natin at point-blank misses natin.

The game vs NU is also winnabe. We just need to contain Aroga. kaya naman sya sabayan ni De Leon sa bilis.

And ang scoring threat ng NU aside from Aroga are - Alolino, Alejandro, and Javillonar. And kayang kaya yan ineutralize nina Varilla, Palma, at Batiller.

And damn, that was one stupid foul Javier. Sorry,

Bawi UE!

UAAP Season 78: UE Red Warriors, The New Beginning Empty Re: UAAP Season 78: UE Red Warriors, The New Beginning

Post by cavalier18 Sat Sep 12, 2015 10:36 pm

Upon watching the replay of UE vs. NU, here are my observations:

1. They rotate the ball much better this time. Smart decisions are now being employed on court, resulting to open shots for treys.

2. Damn legs! Ang bibilis! Akala ko nakafast-forward ang palabas. Nakakapagod habulin.

3. Turnovers still haunting them when the passing lane were blocked. Good thing is those speedy legs ay kayang habulin. Must reduce their opponents points off TO's. Ayun ang papatay sa kanila.

4. Great D on Aroga and NU guards. Limiting their output was the key on making NU ineffective. Dun umaasa ng points ang NU, the others were on D.

5. Batiller, in my opinion ay yung sinadya pa ni Manong sa Mindanao para irecruit. This guy has killer instincts on the court.

Well, I honestly thought that UE ran out of gas on latter part of 1st half and entering 2nd half NU would take advantage of it. Good thing that the team was more composed and didn't back down to that torrid NU onslaught; and, good day for us that Aroga ain't to himself, maybe still have championship hangover.

I thought the same thing too. But the number of steals made by the entire team, they're everywhere man! If they could limit their turnovers, they're a deadly team. I can finally see a more Pumaren brand of squad.

UE over NU 76-71

Gutsy win -- the boys displayed heart and never backed down. Batiller - what can i say more the kid just has it.Our guard play was very good -- fearless drives , fluid ball movement and rotations. we just gotta limit the turnovers. great bounce back game from the vets too.

Positives

1. EDSON BATILLER. the kid can play.

2. Varilla and De leon atoned for their poor play against UP. we need them to be consistent. ditto Charcos.

3. Abanto and his hustle and energy.

4. Pumaren Press. our defense fuels our offense. let's hope our strength and conditioning can last till the end -- we run a very fast pace.

Negatives.

Turnovers and Freethrows.

Nung games natin vs up and nu amy nagcramps sa players nila.

The way they run the press, di malabong magcramps sila. If they can sustain their defense and keep the teams commit turnovers and convert those into points, we're a deadly team. The rookies ran the press just what the Pumarens want them to do.

UAAP Season 78: UE Red Warriors, The New Beginning Empty Re: UAAP Season 78: UE Red Warriors, The New Beginning

Post by cavalier18 Wed Sep 16, 2015 9:10 pm

THINKING OF THE FUTURE.

Early in his UAAP career, Edson Batiller is already proving that he will be a big piece of UE's future.
Forgotten in the windup to the UAAP 78 Men’s Basketball Tournament, University of the East is one of the leaders early in the season.

Following a loss to start their campaign, the Red Warriors have rang off back-to-back victories and it’s no surprise that it has coincided with the breakout of Recto’s newest backcourt bomber.

UE’s rise in the standings is primarily thanks to the emergence of Edson Batiller. Riding two consecutive 23-point outings from their first-year player, the Warriors took down defending champion National University and then competitive Adamson University.

A transferee from Holy Trinity in General Santos City, Batiller has repeatedly been called by head coach Derrick Pumaren as “my number one recruit.” Then in his first year on the job, Pumaren first saw Batiller’s talent during the 2014 Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup and immediately courted him to come to Recto.

Sharing what clinched his “number one recruit,” Pumaren jested, “Siopao at mami, bumigay na sakin. He came cheap.”

While he gamely admitted that he was indeed fond of siopao and mami, Batiller said it was the opportunity to play in the biggest and most prestigious league that made him decide to leave GenSan. “Siyempre, UAAP,” he said.

He then continued, “Sabi ni manong (referring to Pumaren), kung gusto mong magka-future sa basketball, may offer ako sayo sa UE.”

Everything fell into place from there as after serving residency, Batiller again showcased his talent in the 2015 Filoil – now as part of a youthful UE squad. Although he has consistently impressed, the Warriors’ newest rising star was quick to temper insinuations that he is now their go-to-guy.

“Sabi ni manong, sa amin, walang go-to-guy. Gawin lang ang trabaho at kung sino ang suswertehin, siya makakakuha,” he said.

Moreover, Batiller said it was not his individual statistics, but a collective desire to disprove preseason projections that has UE playing well. “Yung prediction nila samin na 0-14, sabi ni manong, maglaro lang tayo. Dun natin ipakita yung sagot natin sa predictions nila,” he said.

UAAP Season 78: UE Red Warriors, The New Beginning Empty Re: UAAP Season 78: UE Red Warriors, The New Beginning

Post by ghost09 Thu Sep 17, 2015 4:43 am

UE over ADU 89-78

A game of counter runs. Great game from edson batiller , one of these days he will come back down to earth , for now let us enjoy this run of his 23pts 8asts 6stls 1to - what a stat line. Every game there seems to be a new warrior stepping up, last game it was abanto - yesterday it was Clark derige 12pts 10rebs and Fran Yu 8pts they combined for that 3rd qtr run. Another steady outing for our vets with Varilla leading the way with 14.

Positives.

1. 28 Assists. Unselfish play from the boys. hoping this trend continues

2. 11 Steals. Defense is our mantra.

3. Edson Batiller. Again where would we be if not for this kid?

4. Paul Varilla. The guy is getting into a rhythm, that bodes well for us.

Negatives.

Mental lapses. we gave up to many runs to them -- straying away from the system when we had a big lead

Freethrows. Yu missed atleast 4 by my count.

UAAP Season 78: UE Red Warriors, The New Beginning Empty Re: UAAP Season 78: UE Red Warriors, The New Beginning

Post by icemint Thu Sep 17, 2015 11:28 am

It was a convincing win nonetheless.

Fran Yu is now showing why he is the MVP of last year's Palarong Pambansa.

Marami tayong unheralded players like Abanto, Gonzales, and Derige.

Blessing in disguise yung pagkasuspend ni Javier.

---------

Yes, hindi na eligible si Batiller for ROY kasi hindi sya straight out of high school.

UAAP Season 78: UE Red Warriors, The New Beginning Empty Re: UAAP Season 78: UE Red Warriors, The New Beginning

Post by icemint Thu Sep 17, 2015 11:36 am

It could have been a 30-pt game if not for those missed free-throws.

The last time UE had a “Super Rookie” was when a rookie-transferee named “Bonbon” Custodio donned the red and white under the tutelage of guess who, Former UE Head Coach Dindo Pumaren and Team Consultant Derek Pumaren. (Remember that painful 2006 Season where we were defeated by the Tigers twice in the Final 4?).

And now, another “Bon” is making waves as a “UE Super Rookie” under the guidance of the Pumaren Brothers. (Though he is ineligible for the Rookie of the Year Award).

Rookie Bon Batiller continues to make waves as UE Warriors keep Adamson winless

From: Reuben Terrado

BON Batiller scored a game-high 23 points as University of the East won its second successive game, beating Adamson, 89-78, on Wednesday in the UAAP Season 78 men’s basketball tournament at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The rookie-transferee from General Santos City also dished out eight assists and had six steals in another all-around effort that mirrored his 23-point effort in the Warriors' win over reigning champion National University over the weekend.

UE improved to 2-1 (win-loss), but a a lackluster start that saw the Warriors trail 20-26, at the end of the first quarter was a source of frustration for head coach Derrick Pumaren.

“What I could not accept is making mistakes and losing our focus. Sometimes, there is a tendency to run away from the system defensively and offensively,” said Pumaren.

Paul Varilla added 14 points while Clark Derige added 12 ppoints and 10 rebounds for UE, which stepped on the gas in the middle quarters to built leads as many as 17 points .

Rookie JD Tungcab had 16 points while Nico Capote added 15 for the Falcons, who dropped to 0-3.

The scores:

UE (89) — Batiller 23, P. Varila 14, Derige 12, Charcos 9, Yu 8, Javier 6, De Leon 6, Palma 6, Abanto 2, Gonzales 2, Manalang 1, Sta. Ana 0.

Adamson (78) — Tungcab 16, Capote 15, Nalos 14, Ng 11, Villanueva 8, Sarr 6, Ochea 4, Polican 2, Garcia 2, Escalambre 0, Bernardo 0.

Quarterscores: 20-26, 44-41, 63-57, 89-78.

Who will be the better Ravena defender? Varilla or Palma?

How could the would-be Ravena defender for tomorrow’s game neutralize the Ravena flopping/acting skills?
