UE-Erase holds off CEU, nears seven-game sweep of MBL Elims

Published : Wednesday, April 10, 2013 00:00
Written by : People's Tonight

UNIVERSITY of the East-Erase Exfoliant brought down Centro Escolar University- Advance Solutions, 91-84, to move within a win of completing a rare sweep of the MBL Open basketball championship at the Lumera Tower in Legarda, Manila.

The Warriors used two big scorings runs bridging the second and third quarters to take control and keep the upset-minded Scorpions at bay enroute to their sixth straight win in this tough, eight-team tournament supported by Smart Sports, Ironcon Builders, Zucchero Café and Sports Bar, Dickies Underwear and PRC Couriers.

Sumang, Santos and Sumido delivered the key baskets, while Cameroonian recruit Charles Mammie provided the defensive muscle for the Warriors, who need only to win over Wang’s Ballclub to complete a seven-game sweep of the elimination round.

Sumang finished with a game-high 21 points, including 10 in the second quarter, while Santos added 15 points, 13 after halftime.

Mammie contributed six points while leading a tough interior defense that slowed the Scorpions’ offense and triggered the Warriors’ running game.

CEU led 20-19 in the first quarter behind five straight points by Beldad and a three-point play by Pagkatipunan.

But UE, which is seeking a better showing in the UAAP this season under multi-titled coach Boyzie Zamar, hit four three-point shots, two by Sumang, to wrest control in the second period.

Sumido, Casajeros and Noble caught fire in the third quarter, capitalizing on mismatches and helping the Warriors to pull away with several double-digit leads.

A late rally by the Egay Macaraya-mentored Scorpions made the game interesting, but the Warriors wisely dribbled the time away.

Larosa and Beldad carried the fight for the Scorpions .

MBL president Alex Wang said the top two teams after the elimination round will advance to the semis outright with twice-to-beat advantage, while the No, 3 team will battle the No. 6 squad and the No. 4 team will meet the No. 5 squad to determine the other two semifinalists.

The scores:

UE-Erase (91) -- Sumang 21, Santos 15, Sumido 12, Casajeros 9, Noble 8, Mammie 6, Olayon 6, Javier 6, Flores 3, Hernandez 2, Pujanes 2, Olivares 0, Guiang 0.

CEU-Advance Solutions (84) --Larosa 20, Beldad 13, Banua 10, Jeruta 8, Pagkatipunan 8, Martinez 6, Celso 6, Anunciacion 6, Casino 5, Ronquillo 2, De Leon 0, Malubay 0.

Quarterscores: 19-20, 43-39, 64-51, 91-84.

2012-2013 Off-Season Updates - Page 16 Empty Re: 2012-2013 Off-Season Updates

Post by red_engr Fri Apr 12, 2013 12:11 pm

from gameface c/o sam miguel

I caught the fourth quarter of UE's tuneup win over San Beda at the San Beda gym last weekend, and it looks like Boysie Zamar has really worked wonders with this team. It was a 79-72 win, or something in that neighborhood. UE was able to hang on to spreads of three, four, sometimes five points all throughout the quarter. I'd say the most improved Red Warrior is 6-foot-3 swingman JR Sumido, the former RP Youth team mainstay. He still looks awkward as hell whenever he moves but he just plain makes it all come together. I saw him keep the Red Lions at bay with like three straight pullup jumpers right at the keyhole area off a three-dribble drive and no one could stop him. I guess all that height and length are helping him create all the space he needs to launch and make those snap-wrist jumpers of his.

Roi Sumang had a so-so game, mukhang naunahan ng gigil, just plain wanted to blow by every guard in front of him and attack the rim, subsequently losing the handle or getting his passes picked off by the active hands of Roldan Sara, Ryusei Koga and Ivan Ludovice. Roi still had lots of picture-pretty moves though, including breaking both of Sara's ankles on one drive and laying the ball in against 6-foot-6 San Beda center Kyle Pascual on the help.

Lord Casajeros has added a very significant development to his overall game: he has become a much better defender, might even be a lockdown defender now, picking up Rome Dela Rosa and Baser Amer at various points and playing good denial defense on both San Beda stars. Those two of course still got their numbers, but it was clear that Casajeros has stepped up his defensive game.

Adi Santos, Chris Javier and the rest of the UE big men are playing snappier, more confident ball now as well, no doubt thanks to Zamar's ministrations and teachings. Charles Mamie saw limited minutes although that is primarily because Ola Adeogun still had his foot in a plastic orthopaedic boot.

UE now needs to build up conifdence. A lot of times UE loses simply because they have not won for so long, they do not quite know how to win. Parang andaling nasisiraan ng loob kapag nahahabol o kaya natatambakan. When - and I do mean WHEN - they start winning consistently the old UE swagger should come back and see them through the other challenges.

Nice review. Thanks for the updates red_engr. Ive been out of the loop since nalipat ako ng bagong assignment.

Unfortunately, it gets the better of him.

Sama kayo!

JRU, UE make FilOil debut

ABS-CBNnews.com
Posted at 04/16/2013 6:17 PM | Updated as of 04/16/2013 6:17 PM

MANILA, Philippines – A young Jose Rizal University (JRU) Heavy Bombers squad and the University of the East (UE) Red Warriors will make their debut in the FilOil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup against separate opponents at the Arena in San Juan Wednesday.

The Heavy Bombers, playing without stars Nate Matute, John Lopez, Alex Almario and John Villarias, will face a San Beda Red Lions team that is eager to bounce back from an opening day loss to National University (NU).

Only three JRU players from last NCAA season’s team will be in uniform: Juan Salaveria, Cris dela Paz and Brandon Porter.

“You can say we are starting all over again. It’s a young team we have, but we are building for the future,” said fourth-year head coach Vergel Meneses.

San Beda, who lost to NU 73-75 in overtime last Saturday, will be led by the returning Anthony and David Semerad and old reliables Baser Amer, Rome de la Rosa, Arthur dela Cruz and Ola Adeogun.

Game time is at 12:45 pm.

Meanwhile, the Red Warriors are aiming to build on their strong showing from last year’s University Games led in Bacolod City.

This year, coach Boysie Zamar, who came in at the second round of the UAAP Season 75 as a replacement for Jerry Codiñera, will have the benefit of a full training camp with his Red Warriors.

The team has also been bolstered by the addition of former Arellano University Chief Charles Mamie and former La Salle Green Hills star Mario Bonleon.

Zamar will also have the services of the streak-shooting Lord Casajeros, who returns after a year’s sabbatical.

The Warriors will still have veterans Roi Sumang, Adrian Santos, Chris Javier, JR Sumido and JM Noble. Former San Sebastian Staglet Gino Jumao-as will also make his debut after missing out a year.

UE will take the Southwestern University Cobras, who lost to the Ateneo Blue Eagles during their opening day game last Saturday.

Game time is at 2:20 pm.

The Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup is presented by Hanes and Vulcaseal/Bostick. The collegiate basketball tournament is co-presented by Master Facial Wash, Starmobile, Meralco, and San Mig Coffee. Sponsors include DHL, Nature’s Spring, Reyes BBQ, Banco De Oro, and Bayo. Minor sponsors include Molten, Brother’s Burger, San Marino, Bank of the Philippine Islands, and Bacchus Energy Drink.

Tickets are available at SM Tickets 470-2222

UE debuts in Filoil Pre-Season Cup with rout of Cebu’s SWU

MANILA, Philippines – University of the East debuted in the 2013 Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup with an 81-62 rout of Cebu’s Southwestern University Wednesday at the Arena in San Juan.

The Red Warriors continued their winning roll – which started from the second round of UAAP season 75, then the University Games last year – up to the Filoil Pre-Season Cup.

“Everyday kaming nag-p-prepare, kahit Filoil pa lang. Gusto namin maibalik ang UE sa final four. Sawang-sawa na kaming matalo,” said star guard Roi Sumang.

Sumang picked up where he left off from the last UAAP season as a prolific scorer — churning out 21 points, six rebounds, three assists and steals.

Led by Sumang, the Red Warriors — the relatively smaller squad in the match up as the Cobras tote three burly Cameroonians — jumped the gun early, posting 11-0 lead.

Exploiting its advantage in the open court, UE continued to dictate the pace until the lead ballooned to as big as 24 points on a layup by Adrian Santos late in the fourth.

Santos added 16 points and six rebounds, who admitted that he was also fueled by his desire to help UE return to the final four — or even further.

For head coach Boyzie Zamar, getting over the long drought is the battle cry of the Red Warriors who got key recruits like Gino Jumao-as and Mario Bonleon.

“Honestly, the push is there. 2010 that was the last time nag-final four, yung 2008 yung last time nag-finals. It’s been 28 years since we last won a championship,” said Zamar.

The Cesafi champions SWU, meanwhile, continued to struggle with protecting the ball as it absorbed its second loss. The Cobras, this time, committed a whopping 31 turnovers.

Monbert Arong and Fabrice Siewe were the only players from SWU who finished in double digits with 12 and 11, in that order.

The scores:

UE 81- Sumang 21, Santos 16, Casajeros 14, Noble 10, Olivarez 8, Hernandez 4, Sumid 3, Javier 2, Jumao-as 2, Alberto 1, Flores 0, Bonleon 0, Olayon 0, De Leon 0, Galanza 0.

SWU 81 – Arong 12, Siewe 11, Guillena 8, Ortega 7, Aboude 7, Snajo 6, Bregondo 4, Panerio 3, Bautista 2, Pajantoy 2, Goloran 0, Otida 0, Holper 0.

IDK. Pero 3 import ng SWU, tas wala man lang nilabas si Zamar. Improved talaga ang squad. Pinaghahandaan na yan ng Ateneo at ibang schools. Hehehe. Nga pala, I will be watching the UE vs ADMU game on Monday. May sasama ba? Sa lowerbox ako. Smile
