I like how Roi made plays for his teammates. Unselfish basketball. Hehehe. Pampa-good vibes ata yun. Smile

The Warriors were up by 25 at one point in the 2nd quarter.

Then the Brahmans took fire and even lead by 1-2 points in the 3rd quarter.

What happened? The lead evaporated even with our starters in the game. They relaxed. They were not even defending. Mammie was just walking down the court for defense with his usual attitude pag naiinis na.

He was even slapped a technical foul for throwing the ball into the face of a Brahman who was guarding him in an inbound play. Sabi nya nadulas lang daw. Tsk.

The Brahmans were almost immaculate in the 3rd. They showed almost perfect shooting. There was this one point that they made all of their outside shots consecutively with or without defense in front of them.

Roi Sumang came to our rescue once again in the 4th. This guy's really special. Pero pumapangit free-throw shooting nya. Dapat maayos nya yan para next season.

Our next stop is on thursday against the NU Bulldogs at the Ynares Gym.

Red Warriors overcome Brahmans to advance in PCCL qualifiers

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

UNIVERSITY of the East survived a tough challenge from University of Batangas, 81-60, on Tuesday to move into the next round of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) Luzon-Metro Manila qualifiers in Tanauan City.

The Red Warriors limited the Brahmans to only seven points in the final quarter. After leading by 25 points earlier in the game, UE slowed down and saw its advantage trimmed down to just 53-51 at the end of the third period.

Roi Sumang had 19 points, while Charles Mammie added 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Red Warriors, who will next play National University, which beat Perpetual Help, 70-67.

Head coach Boycie Zamar along with Ralf Olivares, Lord Casajeros, JM Noble, and Jairold Flores missed the PCCL game as UE had to split its players as well as its coaching staff with Cebuana Lhuillier, which also had a game in the PBA D-League on the same day.

Cebuana Lhuillier, which has a school tie-up with UE, bowed to Hogs Breath, 93-69.

bakit naman binigay? The team just played their whole PCCL Qualifier so very bad. Imagine UB and CEU even have great local bigmen than our team. Nakakatawa talaga ang recruitment abilities ng UE. Sana marecruit natin yun bigman ng HCHS man lang.

OT: SWU is the best example why the UAAP shouldn't prohibit foreign players to play.

Codinera keen to complete 'unfinished business' as he takes over Arellano coaching job

Codinera keen to complete 'unfinished business' as he takes over Arellano coaching job
Jerry Codinera now sees his assumption to the Arellano top job as a fresh start to his coaching career after a short-lived coaching stint with alma mater UE in the UAAP. Jerome Ascano
PBA great Jerry Codinera has been named the new head coach of the Arellano Chiefs, giving him the chance to take care of unfinished business after a short-lived coaching stint with alma mater University of the East.

Codinera, 47, takes over from Koy Banal as he tries to turn the Chiefs into title contenders in the NCAA - a task he never got to achieve at UE after he was unceremoniously replaced by Boycie Zamar in 2012.

“Yun nga eh. Sana ito na yung continuity nung nangyari sa akin sa UE," said the former Purefoods star. "Hindi ko ma-describe nangyari sa akin dun eh. Pero the pressure was tremendous.”

Describing his ill-fated stint at UE, Codinera said: “They (UE management) wanted to compare the team to other UAAP teams. So na-pressure talaga ako nun."

That the Red Warriors failed to reach the Final Four in Zamar's first full season at the helm is validation the team was still a couple of players short of being a title contender, Codinera added.

"And the way I look at it on hindsight… hindi rin naman nila nakuha. So meaning, talagang kulang pa (sila),” he said. “Pero hindi ko na babalikan pa yun. Nasabi ko lang.”

Codinera now sees his assumption to the Arellano top job as a fresh start to his coaching career, but cautions that he doesn't expect a turnaround to happen overnight.

The PBA great said he is looking to recruit more players as he looks to beef up a team led by Nard Pinto, Prince Caperal, Nichole Bangga and Fil-Am Zach Nichols that finished joint sixth with Lyceum in the NCAA last season.

“I hope the recruitment stage will fill the void. Mapunan kung ano ang kulang and hopefully in my first two years … we can have the recruits and the team will perform,” he said.

Aside from the knowledge he can impart, Codinera hopes the legacy he created as a many-time member of the Philippine team, a two-time UAAP champion with UE, and a pro career spanning 17 years will help inspire his players to reach for new heights.

“Nung dumating nga ako kanina sa gym, andami agad nagtakbuhan sa akin na mga players. Yung iba kasi dun nakakalaro ko din sa legends game. Kaya sana maging maganda this time ang pag-upo natin,” said Codinera.

stump_ wrote:Javier is his only recruit. Please correct me if im wrong.

I'll try hehe

Upon coach jerry's arrival - he let go of Betayene (went to NU) , Abrigo (went to ADU), Trollano (went to ADU , sayang tong bata , if you see this guy on the pba dleague today man , we missed a big one) + other recruits. It was a cleansing of sorts

Clashed with Ken acibar resulting in acibar leaving the team (if my memory serves me right hahah)

Recruited / Players during coach jerry's tenure

San Beda Connection

Chris Javier - still on the team , his best recruit IMO

Von Chavez - out after one season - last seen team B ng letran , Codinera believed that this kid was better than sumang , it was widely reported in gameface (by Wangbu-resident UE oldtimer there and others) that he nearly let go of sumang for this kid. Thank God that did not happen

Cebu Boys (UE held tryouts)

Nike Montalvo - Supposed to be a prized recruit . former HS CESAFI MVP , went to team B i think - never panned out , don't know what happened to the kid

BJ Zosa - dubbed as poor man's james martinez - out after 1 season

MarK Olayon - initially in team B , in his 2nd season , jury still out if he will make an impact . crossing fingers he would take a big step forward next season with galanza and jumao-as

Roy Villarias - PG , initially in team B , played in season 75 - let go by coach boycie

Others

Jessmar Sabangan - transferee . scorer from RTU . plays in the same mold of galanza . out after 1 season

Nico Montelibano - transferee. naalala ko to puro lang papogi sa court . may malakas na backer cguro kaya nakapasok lol . baka model na ngayon to lmao

Ian Carlo Valdez - Recruit from mapua red robins . I thought this kid had promise , he had above average height for a point guard , sayang kung nahasa satin ito . last seen Baste B

John Carlo Duncil - scorer pg/sg from UE high . Don't know if he's in UE still

RR De Leon - From UE High , Bigman with mid range shooting . Played 1 season, relegated to team B , has the potential to be good for us next year

John Paul Mena - who remembers this guy? hahaha parang wala pang 10 mins ata nilaro neto buong S75

Not Sure / From other sources

Charles Mammie - I think he was serving residency already during coach jerry's tenure - ironically transferee from Arellano U

Ralf Olivares - Tore ACL (i think) , should have already played during S75

Dan Alberto -  Transferee from fatima . he was brought to UE by some gameface peeps  if i recall

Gene Belleza - was already with UE  before coach jerry's tenure

I know personally si JP Mena, magta-try out ulit siya with Chuck Barcelona (whom I mentioned before) and Alec Lopez.

They will try their luck pag nagka-tryouts.

Trash-talking Paul Lee narrates how he got into Romeo's head, ruined rookie's game
From: Snow BaduaJanuary 7, 2014, 02:00 pm

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

IF Terrence Romeo is to become the great player almost everyone expects him to be in the pro league, he has to learn to keep his composure in the face of all the taunting and trash talk.

What Reader's Say
Kasama sa laro iyan. Yung trashtalking. Pero yung getting to the head of a player and saying things like "sige nge itira mo wala yan"... "ipasa mo naman yung bola"... hindi ko nakikita yung masama doon. Sa mga competition hindi naman nawawala ang kantiyawan. yung ngang mga fans din mas malupit pa yung sinasabi against Romeo e. Totoo naman kasing buwaya siya sa bola kaya nga isa siya sa mga scorer e. Ikaw ba naman 90% hawak mo bola. LOL -Harlan

Just ask Rain or Shine star Paul Lee.

Former Rookie of the Year awardee Lee, born and raised in Tondo, said he tried to get into the GlobalPort sensation's head and throw off his game with some trash-talking during Rain or Shine's 98-87 win over the Batang Pier on Sunday night.

Lee no doubt succeeded, judging from the reaction of the clearly irritated Romeo and his performance in the game against the E-Painters, where he finished with just 10 points on 17 attempts and failed to carry the Batang Pier in Sol Mercado's absence.

“Oo, talagang inasar ko siya sa laro. Alam ko naman kakahayan ni Terrence. Baka kung hindi ko ginawa yun, baka pumutok pa,” Lee, one of the league's most dazzling guards and perhaps one of its top trash-talkers, told Spin.ph on Monday.

“Magaling na bata si Terrence. Malakas. Matapang. Pero mahina pa siya rito,” added the former UE Red Warrior while pointing to his head and heart.

Asked how he and Rain or Shine's bruisers got in Romeo's nerves, Lee broke into a grin.

“Inaasar ko lang siya talaga all game. Lagi ko siyang sinasabihan ng: ‘Hoy, hindi ka ba nahihiya sa mga kakampi mo? Patirahin mo naman sila.' Nagulat ako nagre-react,” said the league's 'Angas ng Tondo.'

“Pumapalag talaga siya. Sumasagot. Yung iba hindi na kikibo di ba? Siya hindi. Talagang nakikipagtalo.”

Lee laughed as he recalled how Romeo reacted.

“Nung inaasar ko, sinasabi sa akin: ‘Yabang mo. Abangan mo balang araw… ikaw naman ang kakainin ko.' Natawa na lang ako kaya lalo ko siya binubwisit,” said the Rain or Shine star.

Lee recalled another moment in the game when Romeo lost his balance and was left kneeling on the floor before he was fouled by Rain or Shine big man JR Quinahan.

“Nakita ko yun. Sabi ko kay JR na nakaharap si Terrence, ‘Bakit mo pa finoul? Kahit nakaluhod yan, titira yan'... lalong nagalit (si Romeo),” Lee said laughing.

Romeo, himself a trash-talker in college who got involved in an infamous 'wet handshake' incident with De La Salle star Jeron Teng, admitted Lee's taunts got into him.

“Na-frustrate din kasi ako. Wala tayong magagawa dun. Kasama sa basketball 'yun,” said the reigning UAAP MVP. “Hindi ako nasanay na binu-bully kaya nanibago lang ako.

“Saka hindi rin kasi ako yung uri na uurong sa ganun. Pero kahit kanino naman gawin yung ganung bagay pag-takot ka walang mangyari sa iyo,” Romeo added.

Humbling as it may be, Romeo said the experience will help make him a better player.

“Marami akong natutunan (sa encounter na 'yun). Kaya next time, mas magiging handa ako at mag-pe-prepare,” said the outspoken cager.

“Sadya lang siguro na hindi ko pa time at hindi ko pa makuha yung totoong laro ko. Marami pa akong hindi nakukuha. Sobrang kaunti pa ng experience ko saka bata pa naman ako,” he added.

Meanwhile, Lee said he sees his younger self in Romeo, who he feels has the potential to become one of the league's top stars - so long as he matures.

“Kailangan lang niyang matutunan yung little things, gaya ng maturity. Tiyak ko magiging sobrang galing nung bata na yun,” he said.

“Saka dapat hindi siya parang bata na pag may sinabi sa kanya, papatulan na niya agad. Kasi pro na ito. Hindi dapat mainitin ulo mo,” Lee added.

SUMANG YOU ARE THE MAN NA TALAGA!!!

Sayang din ito si Alabanza malaki sana potential nito eh.. naka two years ba ito sa UE?
------------

Gems rally to beat Builders,95-86

Roi Sumang tallied a game-high 28 points off the bench and led a fourth quarter charge by Cebuana Lhuillier that propelled the Gems to a 95-86 victory over free-falling Zambales M-Builders on Tuesday in the PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup at the JCSGO Gym in Cubao, Quezon City.

The University of the East Warriors’ star, playing in his only fourth game of the season, strung up seven straight points during an 11-5 run that put the Gems ahead to stay, 82-78, with still 5:25 to play.

Cebuana coach Boyzie Zamar, though, wasn’t totally pleased with Sumang’s effort saying “he still lacks maturity. There are times he would complain that he is hurting. This is not college basketball anymore so he has to mature.”

James Martinez scored 16 points, Riego Gamalinda had 13, Chris Javier chipped in 12 and Paul Zamar contributed 10 for the Gems, who played their first game since beating Boracay Rum, 68-66, last Dec. 3 and notched their first back-to-back wins of the season.

“It’s a good start but we’re taking it one game at a time,” said Zamar when asked about the team’s chances to make the playoffs.

Zambalez M-Builders picked up its eight consecutive defeat and fell to 2-8.

The Builders looked good at end of the third quarter. Down 57-53, they closed out the period with an 11-2 run and led 68-65 entering the fourth.

Mike Tolomia’s 3 pointer with eight minutes remaining in the fourth, gave the Builders a 73-71 lead, before their shooting went sour the stretch. (Dave Coros)

The Scores:

Cebuana Lhuillier 95 – Sumang 28, Martinez 16, Gamalinda 13, Javier 12, Zamar 10, Bustos 8, Leynes 5, Padilla 2, Paredes 1, Casajeros 0, Flores 0.

Zambales M-Builders 86 – Tolomia 24, Cruz 19, Pogoy 14, Ignacio 7, Alabanza 5, Saret 4, Mendoza 4, Gomnez 4, Wong 4, Vidal 1.

Quarters: 21-22; 45-44; 65-68; 95-86.
