Did Boycie Zamar's ties with San Miguel Corp. lead to firing as coach of Tan-owned UE? Spin.ph digs deeper

From: Reuben TerradoMarch 28, 2014, 02:57 pm

THE shock exit of Boycie Zamar as head coach of University of the East had something to do with the long-standing corporate rivalry between San Miguel Corporation and Asia Brewery, sources with knowledge of the situation told Spin.ph on Friday.

A day after Spin.ph broke the story about Zamar's firing, sources said UE management saw a ‘conflict of interest’ in the former Warriors coach holding a concurrent position as an assistant coach of San Miguel Beer, one of the three PBA ballclubs controlled by SMC.

Prior to his move to the Beermen camp, Zamar was also an assistant coach of another SMC-owned PBA franchise, Barangay Ginebra, during the last Philippine Cup.

UE is owned by Lucio Tan, one of the richest men in the country who also owns Asia Brewery Corporation, a rival company of the San Miguel group. Asia Brewery, incidentally, also bankrolls the Red Warriors through the sponsorship of Cobra Energy Drink.

“’Yun ang iniisip ng management, na you can’t serve two masters at the same time,” said the source.

The move came as a shock for the Recto-based school as Zamar was about to enter only his second full season at the helm with UE after replacing former teammate Jerry Codinera midway through the 2012 UAAP season.

A former UE player, Zamar, who also served as the Red Warriors' coach in the early 2000s, nearly led UE to the Final Four with a 7-7 win-loss record - just one victory short of tying University of Santo Tomas for the fourth seeding in Season 76.

A team official who also asked not to be named said the school feared Zamar would not be able to give his "full commitment" to the Red Warriors this season at a time when the school is hoping for a strong showing being the season host.

“They are worried that he will be busy and not giving sufficient time to the team,” said the team official.

But when asked if Zamar's ties with San Miguel became a factor in the decision, the team official said: “Let us put it this way. It didn’t help.”

UE is expected to release an official statement regarding the coaching situation within the day.

Bagong Coach

Napaka disiplinado ding Coach.
4. France Pumaren - UE Highschool to, tried and tested na din ang coaching skills.
5. Dindo Pumaren - Former UE Warriors head coach at disiplinado mag coach.
6. Louie Alas - Kilalang magaling na Coach din to.
7. Leo Austria - kaso connected na sa Ateneo. Pero pwede naman sya magresign dun.

1. Consultant sa ABL with dindo with a malaysian team ata or indonesian team. Its been a long time he coached , maybe he can be a long term coach till he gets old here ala aric del rosario UST 90's dynasty

2. Great motivational coach like boyzie , I think medyo matanda na for the rigors of college basketball pero kung may mga assistants na magaling naman na pwedeng magsuceed sa kanya in the future , why not?

3. Good Coach - tingin ko baka sya pahawakin (interim) for the meantime

4. he was rumored to be angling the dlsu job last yr before napunta kay sauler , great recruiter good coach (the only pumaren i want to coach UE pero ayaw ko na bumalik sa pumaren press hahaha)

5. Has been successful here. got the closest to the championship (the 16-0) season. can he bring it home the 2nd time around?

6. Great coach , did not have great recruitment in letran but worked with what players he had and made them better - players worked hard for him . Made Letran in contention every year

7. like alas , did not have a strong recruiting program to begin with , but made adamson better with ample players he had . Head na sya ng sports program ng Ateneo mas malawak ang hawak nya ngayon hindi lang basketball. as ricky palou stated , they will not bar him from coaching in other leagues pwera lang sa UAAP.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sayang yung continuity ng basketball program, look at what's happening at UP now we will be going in that direction if we keep changing coaches every 2 seasons.

They should get a strong willed coach, get full control of the program . Look at what Nash Racela did at FEU, he stipulated in the contract that he wanted full control of the team , kahit si montinola/molina di na maka epal sa mga games.

Pumaren brothers, Alas on wishlist as UE begins search for new coach to replace Zamar

BROTHERS Derrick and Dindo Pumaren head the ‘wishlist’ of University of the East for the head coaching position left vacant following the sacking of Boycie Zamar, according to school insider.

The Pumarens are high on the list of coaches being considered by the school to take over the reins following the shock departure of Zamar, who was given the pink slip as Red Warriors head coach.

Former Letran coach Louie Alas, former UE coach Lawrence Chongson, and even Red Warriors legend Robert Jaworski have also been mentioned in the coaching hunt by the school.

Derrick Pumaren, however, looms as a strong candidate mainly because of his vast coaching experience as well as his previous ties with the school, member of the Red Warriors in the early 1970s.

“Gusto nila ng alumnus,” said the source who refused to be named.

A veteran coach who has won championships in the PBA and the old PBL, Derrick was a consultant when younger brother Dindo called the shots for UE from 2003 to 2008.

Dindo also became the head coach of La Salle when another brother, Franz, resigned after the 2009 season to run for a congressional seat in Quezon City.

The Pumaren brothers, sons of former UE player and coach Pilo, were last spotted during last year’s Fiba-Asia Championship where they were consultant of the Hong Kong national team.

While he is on the list, Jaworski is unlikely to be interested. Incidentally, the ‘Big J’ is being eyed by the school as the basketball commissioner for Season 77.

Alas says he is 'available and interested' to coach UE Red Warriors in UAAP

Mei-Lin Lozada
03-31-14 11:00 am

LOUIE Alas has declared himself ready after a one-year head coaching sabbatical, saying that he is available and interested to take the vacant job at University of the East in the UAAP.

An unimpeachable source confirmed to Spin.ph that as of posting time Alas was with Mike Tan, the eldest son of business tycoon Lucio Tan , the top backer of the Red Warriors , and UE assistant team manager Matthew Manotoc.

UE management is now looking for a replacement after Boycie Zamar was fired as Red Warriors head coach.

Alas said there had been several offers for him to coach since last year but he refused to speak about it during that time.

"May tumawag sa akin from UE," he said. "And last year may offer pa akong iba pero 'di ako nagpa-interview kasi wala pang one year."

"Pero ngayon na tapos na ang one year, I'm available and I'm interested in (the offer of) UE."

The Letran teams under Alas won three NCAA championships, made five Finals appearances and reached the Final Four 10 times.

Aside from Alas, brothers Dindo and Derrick Pumaren are also being considered for the job, as well as former coach Lawrence Chongson and PBA legend Robert Jaworski.

The 49-year old mentor is currently in Alaska as assistant coach to Luigi Trillo in the PBA.

Joescoundrel

It should become official this week, dinner-meeting went well: Hello Louie Alas!

BLUE HORSE

Good choice if Alas is the next coach of UE. But will they ask Alas to quit his assistant coaching gig with Alaska? This was one of the main reason given why Zamar was sacked.

Louie Alas was very vocal against foreign players when he was the coach of Letran. In UE, he will have 2 foreigners, “mercenaries” is what they call them.

affraid nagkakalokohan na tayo dito... gusto alumni pero nililigawan si alas. tapos gusto natin may import para "competitive", tapos tatanggalin ang import. ahahaha. ue can't get their act together... this is sad... Anybody knows any news about Eldest Pumaren's plans in coaching UE? He's the safest bet IMO...
