Dr. Jesus Tanchanco Sr. touches base with PHL Ambassador, UE Alumni, OFW Leaders in a whirlwind trip to the Lion City

UE Marketing Department Executive Director, Dr. Jesus T. Tanchanco Sr., led a UE contingent on a trip to Singapore this past week to encourage UE Alumni to form a UE Alumni Association Inc. (UEAAI), Singapore chapter and to promote UE to the heads of overseas Filipino workers (OFW) groups to enjoin them to enroll their and/or their colleagues’ children in UE.

Meeting with UE Alumni

Dr. Tanchanco (with wife Alice) and UE University Relations Officer Edilberto B. Sulat Jr. first met with Philippine Ambassador to Singapore Minda Calaguian-Cruz (UE AB Political Science 1973) and fellow Singapore-based UE alumni, in a dinner-meeting hosted by Ambassador Cruz at her residence on February 28.

In the meeting, graced by Overseas Workers Welfare Association (OWWA) Welfare Officer Ellen Alimanza; former UE College of Arts and Sciences-Manila English Department faculty member for 20 years Mrs. Eppie Valbuena, and several Singapore-based UE alumni, Dr. Tanchanco presented the latest developments in UE.

The UE alumni present were Ma. Perlita G. Tiro (UE BSBA 1962, Cum Laude), Managing Director, Tiro Consulting Services Pte Ltd; David “Boycie” D. Zamar (UE BSBA 1989), former UE Red Warrior and former UE Red Warriors-Men’s Basketball Team Head Coach, now Program Director of Coach Academy Pte Ltd;, SAP Consultant for Integrated Healthcare Information System Zith Iligan-Caneba (UE High School 1986); Roderick “Spud” C. Eduarte (UERMMMCI Nursing 1996), Raffles Medical Group registered nurse and SingaPinoy Entertainment event organizer; Angel P. Esmeralda II (UE BSA alumnus), entrepreneur and Director of Business Bureau or “Biz Bureau”; and Vice Admiral Ramon C. Liwag PCG (UE Engineering, studied in 1974), Philippine Coast Guard’s Office of the Vice Commandant for Operations.

Dr. Tanchanco presented the UE marketing video, which showcases the UE’s environment, facilities, top alumni and other basic information, and informed the alumni of the successful, first ever UE Alumni Global Reunion held in June 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada, and encouraged them to attend the next Global Reunion, to be held in the Philippines in May 2012. Ambassador Cruz responded that they would be part of the “Singapore contingent” of this next UE Alumni Global Reunion.

Dr. Tanchanco encouraged the attendees to form a UE Alumni Association Inc. (UEAAI), Singapore chapter, which will be UEAAI’s first Asian chapter—a proposal received enthusiastically by Ambassador Cruz and fellow Singapore-based UE alumni.

Like existing and future UEAAI chapters, the Singapore chapter formation has two primary purposes: (1) to provide mutual support and encourage brotherhood among alumni [in their country of residence] or belong to their respective class, organization, etc.; and (2) to coordinate with and help accomplish the objectives of the mother organization—as well as to be informed of and be actively involved in the developments and milestones of UE.

Promoting UE to OFW Leaders

On March 1, Dr. Tanchanco and Mr. Sulat met with Ambassador Cruz and Welfare Officer Ellen Alimanza along with a larger group of Singapore-based Filipinos—mostly heads of OFW groups in Singapore invited by the Philippine Embassy in the Lion City, in a dinner hosted by Dr. Tanchanco at 7,107 Flavours, a Filipino restaurant in Singapore’s Marina Square shopping mall.

The OFW leaders included Society of Oil & Gas Professionals and Workers (SOW) President Angelito Bajar; Espesyal Pinoy Founder Obelia Lacanilao-Cutiongco and her husband-Espesyal Pinoy member Edgar Benedict Cutiongco; OFW Pinoy Star Publisher-General Manager Luz Campos Mesenas; Filipino Association of Singapore (FAS) Honorary Secretary and Member Maureen Versoza-Schepper; Marymount Ladies Group member Rosemarie Charamnac; Arleen Caparas and i-Remit Branch Head Meyshel Dela Cruz; FRIENDS (Filipinos Reaching Out Initiative to Educate Needy Students) member Arlyn Gumapon; Philippine Bayanihan Society (Singapore) Senior Executive Lilia Guangco and husband, Arch. Jong Guangco; Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (PSME-SG) President Engr. Jovinel Yambao and girlfriend Liza Perez, a performer-singer in Singapore; Batangas Varsitarian International and Pinoy Golfers Singapore (PGS) Melvin Requino; Ms. Minerva Lau, UP Alumni Association, Singapore (UPAAS); SAMA (Mapua Alumni Association Singapore) President Mr. Fernando Marcelino and wife Aida, also a SAMA member,.

Also present were Philippine Embassy in Singapore officers: Third Secretary and Vice Consul Jed Martin Llona, and Cultural Assistant Nathalie Angeles Fajardo.

After presenting the UE marketing video, Dr. Tanchanco trumpeted UE’s institutional stability, quality education and recent alumni achievements, thereby encouraging the audience members to enroll their children in the UE and spread the good word about UE to their fellow OFWs and co-members in their respective groups and affiliations. He pointed out that UE tuitions can be paid through the Philippine National Bank, Singapore branch in the Lucky Plaza shopping center along the popular Orchard Road.

Amb. Cruz herself spoke of her fondness for UE, having been both a student and a faculty member prior to embarking on a foreign service career, and her perpetual gratitude for having been molded by UE into the full-fledged, globally competent professional that she is now.

The meeting concluded on a productive note, with a number of the attendees inquiring about UE’s course offerings and expressing interest in either enrolling themselves or their children for undergraduate or postgraduate programs.

Amb. Cruz’s Secretary, Malu Roque and Cultural Assistant Nathalie Angeles Fajardo helped in coordinating both meetings.

On both meetings, the attendees received UE complimentary souvenir items such as brochures, posters, bags, pins, key chains, ballpens and fans, among others.
