Rain or Shine vs Powerade

Nagkasabay sina Lee, Martinez at Lingganay.

Si Lingganay nagbabantay kay Lee sa defensa. Si Lee naman nagbabantay kay Martinez.

Nung first time pumasok ni James naka tres kagad buzzer beater off a lucky bounce. Binawi kagad naman ng tres ni Lee. Galing!

Go UE Red Warriors! Itayo nyo bandera ni Lualhati sa PBA!

Patience pays off for journeyman Elmer Espiritu at Ginebra
Rey Joble, InterAKTV · Wednesday, April 3, 2013 · 8:48 pm

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel forward Elmer Espiritu, already a journeyman despite only being in his fourth year in his young PBA career, had an opportunity to shine in his team’s game against Air 21 on Wednesday with several teammates out with injuries.

The former University of the East stalwart didn’t disappoint, helping his team to a fifth straight victory and later hearing the cheers of the predominantly Ginebra crowd.

“Masarap yung pakiramdam siyempre. Nakakataba ng puso na yung crowd nagchi-cheer na sa iyo ngayon,” Espiritu told InterAKTV in an exclusive interview.

Espiritu made the most of his chance, scoring 10 points, including a crucial basket in the fourth quarter, and grabbing six rebounds in one of his better performances as a member of the Kings.

He also played a key role on the defensive end.

“Wala si Kuya Mark (Caguioa) and wala rin sina Kerby (Raymundo) and Rico (Maierhofer), so kelangan mag-step up,” Espiritu said.

The young journeyman, who found himself being shipped from one team to another in his young PBA career, admitted there were times he was getting frustrated, especially when he was not given much opportunity.

But the 6-foot-4 forward now knows how to accept things like this, and instead focuses on staying positive and doing what he can to help his team win.

“Ang sabi ko nga sa kanya, patience lang dahil maraming magagaling na players,” said Charlie Dy, Espiritu’s manager.

Espiritu, Labagala step up as Macklin continues to inspire Ginebra
By Celest R. Flores
INQUIRER.net
9:37 pm | Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013

MANILA, Philippines—In the absence of its three key guys, trust the other players — the “hugot” as coach Alfrancis Chua puts it — to step up for Ginebra.
That was exactly what Elmer Espiritu and Robert Labagala did on Wednesday against Air21, knocking down the crucial buckets that helped the Kings continue riding a five-game winning streak after a 90-84 win.
“Without Kerby [Raymundo], Mark [Caguioa] and Rico [Maierhofer], it’s hard. Air21 play well. Their zone [defense] was clicking and we couldn’t make a basket from the outside,” said Chua after the game.
“But finally yung mga “hugot” like Espiritu and Lagabala [nag-step-up], tapos lahat ng players namin nag-co-contibute. It’s a very good sign.”
Down 79-76, the Kings turned to import Vernon Macklin to exploit Air21′s depleted front court as Mike Dunigan was fouled out.
But they also drew a key triple from Espiritu, and it was a good thing he was ready to take that shot.
“Sa practice naman kasi di naman kami nagrerelax, nag-eextra work pa rin ako lagi after,” Espiritu told INQUIRER.net. “Titinitira ko rin naman [yung mga tres], nagkataon pumasok.
Espiritu provided quality numbers for Ginebra with 10 points and six rebounds in 28 minutes in the absence of Maierhoffer and Raymundo.
“Siyempre thankful ako kasi binigyan ako ng chance, at mas dadagdagan ko pa hardwork. Ngayon importante pag nakita ka na, yung trust ni coach andyan. Dapat anytime na bunutin ako o hindi, ready pa din ako,” he said.
Labagala, meanwhile, added four points — all in the payoff period. He admits that Macklin’s presence has done a lot when it came to his confidence.
“Gusto ko lang maging aggressive ngayon kasi si Vern kasi lahat ng locals binibigyan nya ng kumpyansa,” Labagala also told INQUIRER.net. “Kaya nilaro ko lang yung laro ko. Basta open, nagiging confident lang ako,”
Macklin, who had 32 points, then set up Labagala underneath for a short stab, giving the Kings an 86-81 lead with 1:45 left to play.
“Malaking bagay talaga si Macklin, ibang klase sya,” said Labagala. “Atsaka maganda chemisty namin ngayon, sana magtuloy-tuloy na.”
Espiritu had the same explanation for Ginebra’s five-game winning streak after starting off a 0-4 this PBA Commissioner’s Cup– and it goes beyond Macklin’s monster stats.
“Nag-ge-gel na kami. Andun na yung chemisty. Maganda yung samahan sa practice. Dati kasi laging seryoso, yung pagka-relax wala,” he said. “Nung dumating si Vern, nakakikipagkulitan pa samin. Magandang sign para sa team.

'Coach in waiting' Zamar vows all-out support for Ginebra coach Agustin
By Snow Badu
August 03, 2013, 12:56 pm

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

BARANGAY Ginebra’s incoming coach Boysie Zamar said he was humbled to be the personal choice of no less than San Miguel Corp. president Ramon S. Ang to join the country’s most popular ballclub.

“Na-humble ako. I just can’t believe that of all the teams ito pang pinakasikat na koponan sa bansa (ang sasamahan ko),” Zamar told Spin.ph, exactly a week after Ang announced infront of the whole team his appointment.

“Tayo naman hardworking lang. Nag-start tayo from the ranks, 'yun naman ang importante (alam natin ang hirap),” added the current coach of the University of the East Red Warriors in the UAAP.

Spin.ph has also learned that Zamar is a coach in waiting, with SMC planning to install Zamar as Ginebra head coach after he has completed his commitment with the Warriors in the college leagues. (For full story, see Is Boycie Zamar next in line for Ginebra head-coaching job?)

Zamar, however, believes that with still three months to go in the current season, anything can still happen.

The UE coach said he will be there to support interim Ginebra mentor Ato Agustin, even if a championship for the one-time PBA MVP may pre-empt his planned appointment.

“Anything can happen. Ano mang assignment susundin ko. I will just play it by ear,” he said. “At the same time, learning experience ito, malaking bagay yun.”

“Kung mag-cha-champion kami (under coach Ato), magiging Masaya ako. Mas masaya ako nun. And I will do my best to support that goal ngayong conference,” added Zamar.

“I think I will just take it one step at a time. Importante dito marami tayong matutunan. So whatever we can do to help now as a member of the coaching staff, 'yun muna ang gagawin ko.”

Agustin, for his part, vowed to make his stint with Ginebra a memorable one, regardless of how long it lasts.

“Okay lang sa akin 'yun (na maikli). As long as yun ang binigay sa akin na posisyon, ta-trabahuhin ko na lang. Kailangan lang talaga tulong-tulong ang mga players at coaching staff,” said the former San Miguel star.

CEBUANA Lhuillier parades the core of the University of the East Warriors as they debut against Café France in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup on Thursday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Seven UE players from the recently-concluded UAAP Season 76 led by Mythical Five member Roi Sumang are seeing action for the Gems, now also being coached by Warriors mentor Boycie Zamar.
The Gems-Bakers match is set at 4 p.m. in another tripleheader.
Warriors Ralf Olivares, Chris Javier, JM Noble, Adrian Santos, Lord Casajeros, and Jai Flores are also suiting up for Cebuana, together with former UE Warriors Paul Zamar and James Martinez.
The Gems will be facing a Café France squad, led by Eliud Poligrates, that is looking to bounce back after a 74-83 loss to Cagayan Valley.
Zambales M-Builders also hopes to get back on the winning track when it takes on the debuting Wangs Basketball Couriers at 12 p.m.
The M-Builders is coming off an 87-91 loss to Cagayan Valley to drop to 1-1 win-loss.
Cagayan Valley leads the way with a 2-0 win-loss card.
After playing in minor leagues, Wangs is taking its act to the developmental league.

Hogs’ Breath will be campaigning in the PBA D-League for the second straight time, beefing up its line-up after winning just one game in the Foundation Cup.

Cebuana Lhuillier evens record, keeps Derulo Accelero winless

From: Reuben Terrado November 5, 2013, 05:52 pm

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

CEBUANA Lhuillier notched its first win in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup, beating Derulo Accelero, 88-60, on Tuesday at The Arena in San Juan.

James Martinez, Paul Zamar, and Ralf Olivares combined for eight triples in the contest as the Gems evened their record to 1-1 and kept the Oilers winless in three games.

Cebuana Lhuillier coach Boycie Zamar said the chemistry of the team featuring holdovers from last conference and new acquisitions from University of the East is still a work in progress.

“Ang realidad nung first game is ’yung mga holdovers namin, hindi naglaro ng six months tapos hindi mo rin masisisi ’yung mga UE players na naglaro sa UAAP,” said Zamar as he claimed his first coaching victory in the developmental league.

“Basketball is a game of adjustments and today, na-execute naming ’yung depensa namin although ’yung opensa namin hindi,” he added.

Martinez had 15 points, six rebounds, and five assists, while Paul Zamar, his former teammate at UE during their UAAP days, added 14 points and seven assists.

Olivares, meanwhile, had 13 points on 3-of-6 shooting. He had back-to-back triples in the second period that started a UE breakaway for a 41-31 halftime lead.

Raul Soyud had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Oilers.

The scores:

Cebuana Lhuillier (88) – Martinez 15, Zamar 14, Olivares 13, Banal 11, Aguilar 8, Javier 7, Dizon 6, Alas 5, Leynes 5, Casajeros 2, Flores 2, Paredes 0, Noble 0.

Derulo Accelero (60) – Soyud 15, Manuel 10, Juruena 7, Wong 6, Jeffries 6, Corpuz 4, Morillo 4, Importante 3, Bautista 3, Dilay 2, Wierzba 0.

Quarterscores: 19-18; 41-31; 62-44; 88-60.

Zamar hopes to get Sumang back in harness soon for Cebuana
Reuben Terrado

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

CEBUANA Lhuillier has managed to bounce back after losing its opening game in the PBA Developmental League, but coach Boycie Zamar knows he needs all the firepower he can get and is hoping injured UE star Roi Sumang would be able to see action soon.

Sumang is still out two months since hurting his knee during the Red Warriors’ campaign in the UAAP Season 76.

“He is still recuperating. Two months na. He has to recover soon,” Zamar said.

He was in uniform but was not fielded on Tuesday when the Gems won over Derulo Accelero, 88-60.

UE has a school tie-up with the Gems in this year’s Aspirants Cup.

Although the high-scoring guard didn’t suffer a ligament tear, UE and Cebuana Lhuillier coach Boycie Zamar said Sumang is still not available for the Gems due to the same injury.

Sumang, who was named to the Mythical Five award in the UAAP, landed awkwardly during UE’s match against Ateneo last September and had to be stretchered off after the game.

Zamar says the D-League experience will also be for his own good.

“Alam mo naman ang basketball, kapag naka-bakante ka, maiiwan ka. Sabi ko nga sa kanya, sayang ’yung experience kasi iba ’yung mentally tough dito,” said Zamar.

Paul Lee, Dillinger, Lassiter beef up Gilas Pilipinas as Reyes bares 17-man pool
From: From the wiresFebruary 28, 2014, 04:21 pm
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
MEMBERS of the Gilas Pilipinas team that finished runner-up in last year’s FIBA-Asia Men’s Championship along with three new faces have been named as part of the
16-man pool that comprises the national team for the FIBA-World Cup in Spain and possibly, the Asian Games in Incheon, Korea.

Coach Chot Reyes included in the pool the 12 players who suited up in the qualifier of the world basketball championship held here last August, namely, Jimmy Alapag, LA Tenorio,  Jayson Castro,
Larry Fonacier, Jeff Chan, Gabe Norwood, Gary David, Ranidel Ocampo, Marc Pingris, Japeth Aguilar, Junemar Fajardo and naturalized player Marcus Douthit.

Beau Belga and Greg Slaughter, the last two players cut before the FIBA-Asia meet, were also named in the pool along with newcomers Marcio Lassiter, Jared Dillinger, and Paul Lee.

Andre Blatche of the Brooklyn Nets is the other naturalized player in the pool, although his stint in the national team remains pending as he awaits the approval of Congress with regards to his naturalization papers.

Slaughter and Lassiter however, remain doubtful as the two of them should have applied for a Filipino citizenship by the age of 16-years-old as required under the new FIBA rule.

Reyes however, remain positive the two will be allowed to suit up for the team if and when they make it to the final list.

“We have time to sort that out,” said Reyes about the status of both Lassiter and Slaughter, whom the national coach stressed already played for the Philippine team in the past as Lassiter was part of the
Smart Gilas squad that saw action in the 2011 Fiba-Asia meet, while Slaughter was a member of the national team to the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games.

FIBA however, was quick to clarify its rule on citizenship, saying that `it’s no guarantee for a player being allowed to suit up again even if he already played for the national team before.”

“I would like to acknowledge the team owners and the PBA Board of Governors for allowing me to name the players in the pool. I would like to thank the PBA for its continued partnership to the national team effort,” Reyes said.

The team will have its first practice together on Monday evening at the Philsports Arena and continues to hold once-a-week training until such time the entire roster can hold regular practices.

Gilas Pilipinas booked a berth to the FIBA-World Cup following its silver medal finish in the Fiba-Asia tilt. This marked the first time in 40 years the country is seeing action in the world basketball stage.

Gilas Pilipinas bagged the silver medal and a spot in the FIBA World Cup where it will play in Seville for the Preliminary Rounds. This will be the first time after 40 years that the country will be playing in the world basketball stage.
