Jose Rizal University turned up the intensity on defense to silence Group A top seed University of the East, which played without injured rising star Roi Sumang. The Heavy Bombers showed off their calling card when it mattered the most as the likes of Alex Almario and Carlos Dizon put the cuffs on the Red Warrior backcourt, in the process delaying their usually high-powered offense and cutting the supply line to Ken Acibar, who was limited to just three points. JRU was equally efficient offensively as veterans Nate Matute and John Lopez capitalized on open looks and gaping seams. The duo combined for 27 markers.

We were informed that UE will field only one team with the late entry of NU. We aren't sure yet what the composition of this remaining UE team is. Their two new Africans might be seeing action.

Yan nga sabi ni Amibaboi sa akin kahapon, one team lang ang iffield natin.

Ang maglalaro lang sa Fr. Martin's ay yung mga hindi kasama sa Cobra para hindi sila mapagod masyado.

NU is waiting for the winner of the winner of the Arellano-UE game this Thursday.

Apparently UE head coach Jerry Codinera was part of the PBA Legends who had a couple of exhibition games in Her Majesty's Capital. Proceeds of these games would go straight to the victims of Sendong and the last big earthquake courtesy of the PBA social outreach programs.

Fr Martin Cup semifinals are this Sunday 19 February at Trinity Gym, starting at 12:00 noon. Admission is free but those with cars should go a little earlier since parking there is limited.

UE, JRU, AdU reach Fr. Martin semifinal

MANILA, Philippines - University of the East, Jose Rizal U and Adamson stunned their respective fancied rivals to barge into the semifinal round of the 18th Fr. Martin Summer Cup basketball tournament at San Beda gym in Manila last Tuesday.

John Duncil made clutch baskets while Chris Javier hit a free throw as the Warriors, made up mostly of Team B players, repulsed the La Salle Archers, 64-63, to set up a semis clash with the Heavy Bombers, who surprised the Letran Knights, 89-79.

Ateneo and Adamson will dispute the other finals berth after the Eagles, with Justine Chua and Oping Sumalinog combining for 26 points, routed the Perpetual Help Altas, 81-61.

The semifinals will be held today at the Trinity University of Asia in QC.
