UAAP ban on foreign players eyed as league reaches consensus, says top official
A UAAP ban on foreign players is imminent as top university officials have reached a consensus on the issue, the president of the University of the Philippines said.
UP president Alfredo Pascual told Spin.ph the ongoing review of the league’s by-laws has tackled a move to close the door on foreign players, which in turn would be discussed within the UAAP board soon.
“Pinag-usapan na yan in the last board meeting. I think there is consensus with respect to that issue,” said Pascual in a chance interview with Spin.ph.
“It came out like a consensus.”
Such a ban will have the UAAP following in the footsteps of rival league NCAA, which has stopped the recruitment of foreign players for its league teams beginning in 2015.
"The NCAA has already laid down the policy setting 2015, I think, as the start of the no recruitment of foreign players ... I think it is but appropriate if we follow suit in the UAAP," said Pascual.
Pascual said UP fully supports a ban on foreign players and added representatives of the seven other member universities are amenable to the proposal.
National University's board representative Nilo Ocampo admitted a ban on foreign players has been tackled once by the league board, but insisted there has been no concrete push from other members to impose such a policy.
“Napapag-usapan na 'yan. Pero madalas informal pa lang,” Ocampo said.
Asked about his take on the issue, Ocampo said: “There are some legit foreigners who are really studying - pero how do you differentiate yung nag-aaral talaga at sa ni-recruit as athletes. 'Yun ang mahirap.”
UP College of Human Kinetics dean Ronwaldo Dizer, meanwhile, is all out in supporting the move.
“Let’s face it. Tumataas ang level ng kumpetisyon (because of the arrival of foreign players), pero may ill effect ito sa ating mga homegrown athletes,” Dizer said.
“For every foreign athlete, one Pinoy is deprived of a spot in the varsity team. Sa bandang huli, may mga Pilipino na hindi nabibigyan ng pagkakataon sa isang liga tulad ng UAAP,” he added.
But Pascual is certain a ban on foreign players will be implemented soon.
“When? I can say very soon. Sometime around that area - 2015, 2016,” added the state university’s 20th president.
Ocampo assured that if ever such a ban will be put in place, it will not be implemented immediately to give all the member schools enough time to adjust their respective sports programs.
“If we ever do that, we will give a time frame for the execution of the rules. Alam namin na halos lahat have already prepared their programs,” Ocampo said.

Re: 2013-2014 OFF-SEASON UPDATES
Best chance talaga natin next year. Grab na natin ung opportunity habang d pa eligible ung ibang african recruits ng ateneo at lasalle. Sa NU naman, no more Bobby Ray Parks for next season coz magttraining na siya sa US to try his NBA dream. Masasabi ko, isa tau sa may intact pa ang line up.

Would there be a possible mvp from UE next season? Ngaung wala na si Romeo, Parks, Mbe parang nawalan ng kalaban si Sumang. Close to be his contender is Jeron Teng. D rin pala pahuhuli si Mammie sa stats.

"UE has a Roi Sumang-like Juniors player in Camillus Altamirano (14). Reymar Caduyac (16) and Magic Marata (18 ) would most likely be included in their Seniors team as well."
Post by Sir Joescoundrel
"UE will return a stronger team next season. It will take questionable suspensions to once again take them out of the Final 4 picture. Charlie Mamie will finally have a quality backup in Tim Arafat. While Charlie is a proven beast inside, Arafat is a natural 3/4 who will play a lot coming from the perimeter but will still be the best backup center off the boards in the UAAP next season.
6'2" Fil-Am forward Bong Baroga saw action in the recently concluded Fr Martin Cup Division 2, and plays taller than his listed height suggests, certainly knows all the tricks, so he will be an able replacement for 6'3" Adi Santos. Baroga will easily replace the rebounds of Santos while providing surer scoring since he has much better hands than Santos.
I am looking forward to a 6-foot swingman prospect who is now enrolled with UE. He's not the sharpest tool in the shed but he's a stud athlete who does everything at a very high level, think of an even better version of Bonbon Custodio, sans the sahod-palad attitude. He'll become a very good swingman with Roi Sumang getting him the ball. "

Re: 2013-2014 OFF-SEASON UPDATES
I doubt that the 3 juniors will likely to be included in the seniors team. Prolly team b. Si Caduyac ang pinakamatunog sa juniors natin.
I believe Joescoundrel is talking about Renz Palma. Kung napanood nyo yung video na narecord ko nung Fr. Martin's game ng UE last time makikita nyo din ung hype re Renz Palma.
Arafat can play guard. But he has the same offensive mindset just like Palma, Sumang and Jumao-as.
Kaya nga sabi ko sa post ko dati Attack mode pag nagsabay sabay yang 4 na yan.
I just heard of Baroga. Kung nandun sya sa game last time hindi sya nagstandout. Mas ok si Paolo Varilla.

Nung nabasa ko naisip ko din agad si Palma , iba pa pala - tingin ko ito ung dinala nya sa UE , he was asking a few months sa UE sub forum kung sino kakausapin (insiders) sa UE - he said he had a high level recruiticemint wrote:I doubt that the 3 juniors will likely to be included in the seniors team. Oh nice. Baka tinatago pa yan.
Good at least pag alis ni Sumang may scorer na tutulong kay Palma at Jumao-as.

EYE-IN-THE-SKY . namiss ko na alley-oop sa UE

'Yun isang tropa ko nagdala sa UE.
If this kid was actually as good with reading comprehension and college composition as he is with two-hand dunking and crossing over into a pull-up jumper I would've brought him to the Ateneo. He's a good kid, humble in spite of his immense talents. Roi Sumang will turn him into a star, especially eye-in-the-sky plays.
Palma however will also contribute, at least as a secondary ball handler and as a trap guy on Boycie's 1-3-1 variants. Olayon should also be a better player next year.
All told UE is looking pretty good for Season 77, at huwag lang madale ulit ng mga suspensions will finally return to the Final 4. I pity whoever they will face in the playoffs...

Re: 2013-2014 OFF-SEASON UPDATES
Lahat to offensive minded - Sumang, Palma, that guy Joe's is talking about, Arafat, and Jumao-as.
Kung gusto natin ng run and gun sila lineup natin.
Pag gusto naman ni Coach Boyzie ng mabagal na laro - Alberto, Varilla, Galanza, Mammie and Javier
Meron pa tayong Olayon, Ivan Hernandez at RR De Leon.
Punong-puno tayo next year. Di mo alam kung sino gagamitin ni Coach. Happy problem that is.
I really wanna see Olayon, Jumao-as and Gallanza unleash their true potential.
Sumang, Palma, Arafat is going to be one helluva 1-2-3 combo on the fastbreak.
Tagal ng season 77!!!!!

Re: 2013-2014 OFF-SEASON UPDATES
Arafat and Palma is very sure next year, according to Zamar's assistant.
The other African guy is (correct the spelling if needed) Alwana. He's a 16 y.o guy who will suit up in 2015. Tatangkad pa ito hehehe.
The younger Sumang, maaring sa B pa rin ito dahil hilaw pa.
I've been seeing new faces sa B, mabibilis at may mga laro.
And I know a guy who plays like Kiefer Ravena, plano nyang magtry-out ngayon. Barcelona is his name. High flyer, 6'0, 3rd year college sa UE.
And for other univ news..
Adamson recruited another African guy who doesn't know basketball. Tinuturuan pa nila pero matangkad ito. Football player kasi, just like what happened to Karim Abdul.
Bonleon and Mbala might suit up next season in UST and DLSU. Idk what happened to the ruling.

Archers recruit Mbala itching to play, sees La Salle going for six-peat
From: Reuben TerradoOctober 13, 2013, 11:07 pm
La Salle's triumph has made the wait more excruciating for Cameroonian import Ben Mbala. Jerome Ascano
LA SALLE’s triumph in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament has all the more fueled the competitive fire of Ben Mbala, who is itching to suit up for a team that he believes can dominate for five or six straight years.
Mbala was recruited by La Salle during the preseason after a stellar year with Southwestern University in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. where he dominated the league with his height and build.
The Cameroonian center, however, is currently on residency and will have to wait another year before suiting up for La Salle in 2015 due to the league's new two-year residency requirement for foreigners.
For Mbala, it has become an excruciating wait.
“I’m really excited,” said Mbala, minutes after the Green Archers win the series over UST 2-1 on Saturday. “I have to get ready. My team is waiting for me so I have to work hard.”
Mbala, currently playing for La Salle’s Team B, vowed to help Archers continue to become title contenders for years to come.
“I’m really happy for them. I hope we can reach five- or six-peat,” said Mbala, who watched from the sidelines when the Archers won the deciding Game Three, 71-69, against University of Santo Tomas on Saturday.

Re: 2013-2014 OFF-SEASON UPDATES
Lalong lumalakas tsansa natin next year..
No Mbala yet for DLSU, no more Romeo for FEU, no more Parks and Mbe for NU.
Pag hindi pa tayo nakapasok sa Final 4 at nakarating ng Finals nyan next year with our most potent lineup since 2007, ewan ko na lang.
------------
Mukhang mapupurnada pa yan si Mbala pag naaprubahan yung No-Import Policy by 2015.
