ERASE TAPS UE for MBL TILT

ERASE Xfoliant is teaming up with University of the East in its drive for the 2013 MBL Open basketball championship.

After tapping the core of Perpetual Help in their maiden stint in the PBA Developmental League, the Erasers are now putting their chips on the Red Warriors, who are beefed up by two African reinforcements.

Cameroon native Charles Mammie and 6-foot-8 Moustapha Arafat, who have completed their residency and are expected to suit up in UAAP Season 76, are tipped to lead the Boyzie Zamar-handled crew along with holdovers Roi Sumang, Lordy Casajeros, Ralf Oliveros, Jai Flores, and Gino Jumao-as.

“We’re very happy to be teaming-up with the UE Warriors in our second year with the MBL,” said Erase Xfoliant team manager Louie Gamboa.

“UE is really my first choice to be Erase Exfoliant’s partner team in the MBL. Under Zamar, the Warriors have improved tremendously over the past several months. They will surely be one of the teams to watch in the coming UAAP season,” he added.

Helping Zamar in the sidelines are assistant coaches Nomar Isla and Billy Reyes.

“With a strong and talented team like UE, we hope to perform just as well in our second MBL stint. I have complete faith in Zamar and his coaching staff,” added Gamboa.

Last year, Gamboa fielded two teams in the tourney, with Sexapeel-Lyceum of the Philippines finishing third in the eight-team field.

EASY WIN FOR UE-ERASE

UNIVERSITY of the East-Erase Exfoliant used a balanced scoring attack to roll back AMA Computer University, 94-52, and serve notice of its title aspirations in the 2013 MBL Open basketball championship at the San Andres Sports Complex in Malate, Manila.

JM Noble, Ivan Hernandez, Mark Olayon, JR Sumido and Ralph Oliveros scored almost at will as the Warriors of coach Boyzie Zamar and manager Louie Gamboa led from start to finish and posted one of the biggest winning margins in league history.

Noble scored all of his team-high 13 points the third quarter, including three triples, as the Warriors surprised the Titans with a deadly outside shooting and a dominant inside game to secure their first win in the prestigious tournament supported by Smart Sports, Ironcon Builders, Zucchero Cafe and Sports Bar, Dickies Underwear and KABAKA of Cong. Amado Bagatsing.

Hernandez added 12 points, while Olayon, Sumido and Oliveros contributed 10 points for UE, which is making its MBL debut following a tie-up with Erase Exfoliant.

So dominant were the Wariors that coach Zamar managed to field all his players in the game, which serves as part of their buildup for the coming UAAP season.

“The MBL will provide a new challenge for my players as we continue to prepare for the UAAP. It’s really a good exposure for the team,” said Zamar, who thanked Gamboa for choosing UE as its partner team in the MBL

Jason Jordan and Ian Macaranas paced AMA wuth 22 and 10 points, respectively.

Today, Manila-King’s Bakeshop stakes the solo lead when it meets UE in the first game at 7 p.m.

Handled by coach Braulio Lim and supported by Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, the Capitals have won their first two assignments against CEU-Advance Solutions (82-77) and Wang’s Ballclub (105-100).

The scores:

UE-Erase Exfoliant (94) -- Noble 13, Hernandez 12, Oliveros 10, Olayon 10, Sumido 10, Javier 9, Jumao-as 7, Flores 7, Guiang 6, Alberto 4, Galanza 4, De Leon 2, Casajeros 0, Tomilloso 0, Santos 0.

AMA (52) -- Jordan 12, Macaranas 10, Arceo 9, Basil 7, Magpantay 4, Calma 3, Villena 3, Dizon 2, Balili 2.

Quarterscores: 32-15, 48-29, 73-39, 94-52.

UE-ERASE, MOB IN EASY WINS

UNIVERSITY of the East-Erase Exfoliant and MOB fashioned out similar easy victory over their respective opponents in the 2013 MBL Open basketball championship at the San Andres Sports Complex in Malate, Manila.

The Warriors played true to form to bring down erstwhile solo leader Manila-King’s Bakeshop, 105-65, for their second straight win in the tough, eight-team tournament sponsored by Smart Sports, Ironcon Builders, Zucchero Cafe and Sports Bar, Dickies Underwear and KABAKA of Cong. Amado Bagatsing.

Handled by coach Boyzie Zamar and managed by Louie Gamboa, the Warriors settled the outcome of the match with a 35-point third quarter performance that turned a precarious 43-37 lead into a commanding 78-55 advantage going into the fourth period.

Manila-King’s never recovered from there.

It was the second straight lopsided win for UE-Erase, which debuted with a 94-52 win over AMA last Feb. 19.

Equally impressive was MOB, which demolished AMA Computer University, 81-52, to join reigning PCCL champion University of Santo Tomas-Pacific Pipes- Gerry’s Grill, Lyceum of the Philippines-Uratex Foam and Manila with similar 2-1 win-loss records.

Nino Marquez finished with 13 points to lead three other players with double figures for MOB of coach Yong Garcia and managers Bien Rubio and Mike Ong.

Meanwhile, MBL chairman Alex Wang announces the postponement of the two scheduled games at the Lumera Tower today due to the inclement weather conditions.

The scores:

First game

UE-Erase Exfoliant (105) -- Santos 14, Galanza 12, Sumido 10, Mammie 9, Jumao-as 9, Noble 8, Casajeros 8, Flores 8, Palma 6, Javier 6, Sumang 4, De Leon 4, Alberto 3, Olivarez 2, Olayon 2.

Manila-King’s (65) --S anders 15, Navarro 13, Wade 12, Mangrana 7, Viernes 6, Diputado 6, Clemente 4, Barranta 2, Almario 0, Santarin 0, Amparo 0, Labro 0.

TIGERS, WARRIORS CLASH

Game today: (San Andres gym)

7 p.m. -- UE-Erase vs. UST-Pacific Pipes
8:30 p.m. -- Wang’s Ballclub vs. AMA

UAAP teams take centerstage today as University of the East-Erase Exfoliant and University of Santo Tomas-Pacific Pipes dispute the solo lead in the 2013 MBL Open basketball championship at the San Andres Sports Complex in Malate, Manila.

Game time is 7 p.m. with odds about even between the Warriors and the Tigers, two of the country's winningest collegiate teams now deep in their preparations for the coming 76th season of the UAAP in June.

Now handled by former national team coach Boyzie Zamar, the Warriors have swept their first two assignments with a pair of 40-point wining margins -- 94-52 over AMA Computer University last Feb. 19 and 105-65 over Manila-King’s Bakeshop last Feb. 21.

The Tigers of multi-titled coach Pido Jarencio have also won two games against Centro Escolar University-Advance Solutions, 91-83, and MOB, 89-74, but lost to Lyceum of the Philippines-Uratex, 63-71.

Actually, the Tigers are locked in a four-way tie with Lyceum, MOB and Manila-King's with similar 2-1 win-loss records in this prestigious, eight-team tournament sponsored by Smart Sports, Ironcon Builders, Zucchero Cafe and Sports Bar, Dickies Underwear and KABAKA of Cong. Amado Bagatsing.

This will be the first-ever meeting between UST and UE in the MBL.

UST-Pacific will be bannered anew by Jeric Teng, Kevin Ferrer, Karim Abdul, Alon Mariano, Clark “Tata” Bautista, Ed Daquioag, Louie Vigil, and Kim Lo.

UE-Erase, on the other hand, will rely on JM Noble, Ivan Hernandez, Mark Olayon, JR Sumido, Gino Jumao-as and the Cameroonian tandem of Charles Mammie and Moustapha Arafat.

The Tigers have regularly competed in the MBL as part of their annual pre-season preparations for the UAAP since 2010.

The Tigers have won two MBL titles before finishing runner-up to Ateneo in the UAAP and winning the coveted Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) last year.

The Warriors, who are also hoping to contend for the title in the UAAP with their vastly-improved line-up, have also kept themselves busy and joined the MBL as part of their pre-season build-up.

In the MBL, UST is being supported by Pacific Pipes and Gerry's Grill while UE is being backed by Erase Exfoliant.

National Interclub champion Wang’s Ballclub meets AMA Computer University in the second game at 8:30 p.m.

2 FEU players nabbed for marijuana possession

MANILA - Two players of the Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws were arrested by police authorities on Wednesday after they were caught in possession of marijuana near their campus in Manila.

The two varsity basketball players were identified as 22-year-old Anthony Hargrove Jr., a transferee from Pennsylvania, and 22-year-old Adam Mohammed, a Canadian national.

Police said they spotted the two acting suspiciously while smoking along Nicanor Reyes Street corner Recto Avenue, prompting them to approach the two students.

After frisking the two players, police found dried marijuana leaves.

Authorities suspect Hargrove and Mohammed were smoking marijuana while walking outside their campus.

As of posting, they were detained at the Manila Police District Sampaloc Station and are facing charges for violation of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act.

Meanwhile, FEU has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident. In a text message to radio dzMM, FEU Tamaraws Head Coach Nash Racela also said he will only comment once he is able to talk to his two players. -- Report from Zhander Cayabyab, dzMM

MBL: Wang’s outplays AMA, 104-81; UE triumphs

Game Saturday: (Lyceum gym)

6:30 p.m. -- UE-Erase vs. Lyceum-Uratex

WANG's Ballclub played just hard enough to subdue AMA Computer University, 104-81, and barge into the win column even as University of the East-Erase Exfoliant won by forfeiture over University of Santo Tomas-Pacific Pipes in the 2013 MBL Open basketball championship at the Lumera Tower in Legarda, Manila.

Erwin Sta. Maria, Mar Reyes, and Edwin Asoro scored almost at will for the Pablo Lucas-mentored Wang's Ballclub, which outscored AMA, 27-10, in the third quarter to turn a close contest into a rout.

Sta. Maria scattered 17 points, Reyes added 15 and Asoro contributed 14 for the Mandaluyong-based team, which dropped its opening-day assignment to Manila-King's Bakeshop, 100-105.

Gile led the Titans with 18 points, followed by Kim Villena and Archie Bansil with 14 points apiece.

The Titans, who were handled by assistant coach Benjie Diswe in the absence of head coach Mark Herrera, dropped to 0-3.

The much-awaited match between UAAP teams was declared in favor of the Warriors after the Tigers walked out of the match with 4:55 left in the third quarter in protest of officiating.UE led, 52-40 when the game ended abruptly.

UST coach Pido Jarencio was thrown out of the game for questioning the referees’ call, while UE forward Jai Flores was banished from the playing court for throwing a punch at UST's Aljon Mariano.

MBL chairman Alex Wang deferred action on the personalities involved pending investigation on the matter.

The eight-team tournament is being supported by Smart Sports, Ironcon Builders, Zucchero Cafe and Sports Bar, Dickies Underwear and KABAKA of Cong. Amado Bagatsing.

The scores:

First game

UE-Erase Exfoliant won by forfeiture over UST-Pacific Pipes. (walkout).

Di nya siguro matanggap na malakas talaga tayo ngayon kasi sila intact pa ang roster nila na naglaro sa uaap finals, tapos tatambakan na ng 20pts ng new look and vastly improved UE WARRIORS kaya nag-walkout na, hehehehe!!! GO UE!!!!

From Sam Miguel (Gameface)

UE was up 11 or 12 points in their MBL game a couple days back when Coach Pido Jarencio instigated a walkout late in the fourth quarter.

I didn't get the stats but I'm pretty sure Charles Mamie and Roi Sumang had good numbers. Mamie is so strong Karim Abdul was havign a dickens of a time gainst him. That was the first time I ever saw Abdul not have an advantage against an opposing center. Even against Greg Slaughter, Abdul had some advantage in foot speed and quickness, not against Mamie.

Kevin Ferrer had a good game and will arrive as a bona fide UAAP star in Season 76. However he also found the goings tough against Mamie. Mamie had at least four blocks in the first half by my count, and must have finished with five or six blocks.

Those games are ongoing at the Lumera gym right across Arellano in Legarda once or twice a week in the evenings, starting around 4:00 PM. We don't have a schedule though, and we basically just lucked out seeing a notice in the newspapers.
